Not much grace can be given to the Charlotte 49ers this season.

They were always expected to be bad in Tim Albin’s first season, but this bad? This is a bit egregious.

Going on the road to face arguably the best team in the Group of Five will emphasize those failings. The South Florida Bulls have an incentive to run up the score, so this spread hanging around four touchdowns need not scare off any backers.

My Charlotte vs. South Florida predictions and college football picks expect a rout on Friday, October 2.

Charlotte vs South Florida prediction

Charlotte vs South Florida best bet: South Florida -27.5 (-120)

The problem shouldn’t be Charlotte’s offense. The problem should be how easily South Florida will find chunk plays against the 49ers.

And the Bulls will. The 49ers defense ranks No. 136 in expected points added (EPA) per rush against and No. 131 in EPA per dropback against, creating the second-worst EPA defense in the country, per cfb-graphs.com

That is how the Bulls would win this game by three scores — but winning it by four or five or six? That is because of Charlotte’s offense.

Not just that it is terrible, which it is, ranked last in the country in opponent-adjusted EPA. However, the real problem is how often and how quickly the 49ers will cough up the ball back to South Florida’s explosive offense.

Charlotte could try to shorten this game by leaning on its rushing attack, except that it is the most impotent rushing attack in the country. The 49ers could try to chip away and set up manageable third-downs, but they rank No. 134 in the country in early-down EPA, meaning third-and-longs are too common an occurrence.

That will mean more chances and probably short fields for South Florida. Those will lead to quick scores.

That is how this blowout becomes an absolute rout, and four touchdowns should not be enough to scare off Bulls backers.

Charlotte vs South Florida same-game parlay

Charlotte genuinely might not score. Its offense is so woeful that it will regularly put its defense in a bad position.

And then South Florida's explosive offense will capitalize. A few chunk gains through the air will set Byrum Brown well on his way closer to 300 passing yards than 200.

Our deep-ball SGP: Big-Play Bulls

You cannot justify any faith in the 49ers offense, so building a hefty same-game parlay for your Friday night will hinge on South Florida's big-play receivers like Keshaun Singleton and Chas Nimrod.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
