The Minnesota Twins hope to avoid a sweep on Sunday when they visit the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field.
The Twins were heavy sellers at the deadline and have lost six of their last seven games. The Guardians have won four straight and are now within two games of a Wild Card spot.
Jose Ramirez is a big reason for that surge, and we explain why he’s likely to have a strong day in our Twins vs. Guardians predictions and MLB picks for Sunday, August 3.
Twins vs Guardians prediction
My Twins vs Guardians best bet: Jose Ramirez Over 1.5 total bases (-115 at Caesars)
Few hitters have come out of the All-Star break swinging the bat better than Jose Ramirez. The switch-hitting third baseman has posted a split of .333/.441/.649 for the Cleveland Guardians since the break, with nine of his 19 hits going for extra bases.
Ramirez also has posted better home splits this season in every category than his away numbers. And last night, he collected two hits in three at-bats, including a two-run bomb to right field to tie the game in the fifth inning.
After being called up on Friday, journeyman pitcher Jose Urena will take the mound for the Minnesota Twins. He’s a pitcher with a lot of velocity, but not much control. He also doesn’t strike many batters out, gives up a high barrel rate, and has only started twice this season.
More importantly, Urena hasn’t pitched in the Big Leagues since June 5. Either he’s going to eat innings regardless of his performance, or the Twins will have to exhaust their bullpen. Both are a win for Ramirez, who has hits in seven of his last 16 at-bats.
Ramirez has registered multiple bases in seven of his nine home games since the All-Star break, and nine of his 22 home runs this season have come in the past five weeks. He’s swinging the bat well, and I like him to have another multi-base game.
Caesars QuickPick: Our Twins vs Guardians same-game parlay (SGP)
Carlos Santana hasn’t had a season to write home about, but he does come into Sunday riding a five-game hitting streak. He’s also had success against Urena in the past, hitting .316 with a walk and only one strikeout in 20 appearances.
Joey Cantillo has seen his velocity dip this season, but it’s his lack of control that is causing him the most problems. Since moving to the rotation to start July, he’s managed to get through five innings just twice in five starts and has managed 6+ strikeouts in just two of them.
More importantly, he’s handed out at least three walks in four of those starts, and will have a very hitter-friendly umpire calling balls and strikes today. He will get strikeouts, but he won’t go long enough in this outing to get Over his total.
