It’s a big series between two teams with high aspirations when the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers meet up.

There are lingering questions for both teams. Can the Yankees get a series win over a playoff team? Can the Tigers generate enough offensive firepower if they find themselves in a series of high-scoring games? We like runs tonight.

My Tigers vs. Yankees predictions break it down here as I bring you my MLB picks when the two teams meet Tuesday, September 9.

Tigers vs Yankees prediction

Tigers vs Yankees best betOver 8.5 (-110)

I’m riding with the Over as my best bet here with a projected total of 9.5. I don’t trust either of these pitchers, especially at this point in time. Let’s start with Detroit Tigers starter Casey Mize.

He delivered in his most recent start against a fickle New York Mets team, allowing zero earned runs in five innings. I don’t take a ton away from it, though.

That’s because the first five starts before that all included him allowing at least four earned runs over five innings. Tonight, he fits the profile of pitchers Yankees hitters have had success against (just as we’ve talked about all season): fastball-heavy with issues generating a high barrel rate.

He’ll come into this matchup with a barrel rate in the bottom 40% of baseball and a very fastball-reliant approach. As we’ve documented heavily throughout the season, the Yankees have both the highest barrel rate in the league and the best numbers against the fastball.

On the other side is Will Warren for the New York Yankees, who I remain pretty down on. The numbers just aren’t good. A strikeout rate of 24% is strong, but it’s accompanied by a hard-hit rate and barrel rate in the bottom 10% of the sport. In other words, when he doesn’t get those strikeouts, he struggles.

The Tigers are roughly an average strikeout-rate team, but they should be well-equipped to do their part on this total against a pretty average pitcher.

Tigers vs Yankees same-game parlay (SGP)

We paired two base totals with our best bets.

Ben Rice boasts the best numbers among Yankees players against the fastball and split-finger, which is basically what you’ll see from Mize.

On the other side, Kerry Carpenter simply doesn’t strike out and profiles very well against Will Warren.
