Game 1 between Detroit and Seattle was a grind offensively. Only five runs were scored over 11 innings, and just two Mariners were able to record a hit.
My Tigers vs. Mariners predictions expect the two sides to pick up where they left off, with pitching dominating early in Game 2. Let’s break it all down with my October 5 MLB picks.
Tigers vs Mariners Game 2 predictions
Who will win Tigers vs Mariners Game 2
Tarik Skubal doesn’t give up crooked numbers often, but the Mariners caused him legitimate problems during the regular season. Skubal allowed at least three earned runs in each start against them, losing both decisions.
The Mariners ranked fifth in ISO and 12th in wOBA against lefties, so they are better equipped than most to grind out some form of offense vs. Skubal.
With Luis Castillo — who has allowed only three runs over his last four games — on the mound, they might not need much to even up the series.
Tigers vs Mariners best bet
Under 3 F5 (-105)
This game has the makings of a slow burn offensively, as the pitching matchup is about as good as it gets.
Tarik Skubal is arguably the best pitcher in the majors and he’s at the top of his game right now. Over his last eight starts, only one team has plated more than a single run against him. He’s giving up next to nothing each night.
Although the Seattle Mariners did give him some trouble this year, it’s difficult to envision Skubal giving up more than a couple of runs in his current form.
Scoring should be a challenge for the Detroit Tigers as well. Luis Castillo gave up only 11 hits and three earned runs over his final four starts of the regular season.
While none of those starts were against high-end offenses, the Tigers are not that either. They limped to the finish line in September and haven’t exactly lit it up in the playoffs.
They deserve credit for finding ways to win, but they’ve scored three runs or fewer in three of the four games they’ve played — and needed 11 innings to hit that benchmark in Game 1 of this series.
Don’t be surprised if we see a ton of strikeouts, and very few hits, until Skubal and/or Castillo leave this game.
Tigers vs Mariners Game 2 same-game parlay (SGP)
Josh Naylor has 15 hits over his last 10 games and picked up at least one knock in 17 of his past 20. He posted a .287+ average vs. each handedness during the regular season. He also hit sinkers and fastballs — Skubal’s two most-used pitches — extremely well. I like him to get back in the hit column Sunday night.
Riley Greene is my preferred target on the Tigers. He has six hits through four playoff games, picking up at least one each time out. He’s 4-for-8 against Castillo and has hit for average or power — if not both — vs. each pitch in his arsenal.
Tigers vs Mariners SGP
- Under 3 F5
- Josh Naylor Over 0.5 hits
- Riley Greene Over 0.5 hits
Tigers vs Mariners home run pick for Game 2
Riley Greene (+425)
Greene possesses an ISO of .200 or higher against each of Castillo's four pitches. Castillo has also given up a lot more power to left-handed bats.
