Thanks to a pair of doubleheaders, there are a massive 17 games on the MLB schedule today. And you know what that means: Limitless potential in the MLB prop betting market.
That said, we look at a trio of team totals today. Can the Blue Jays keep bashing in Baltimore? Are the Cubs just spinning the wheel against Zack Wheeler? And was the Yankees' 12-run outburst against the Mariners a mirage?
We break down and pick these games and more with our best free MLB prop bets and predictions for Wednesday, July 7.
Today’s MLB props and picks
Blue Jays Team Total Over 6.5 (+110)
The Toronto Blue Jays' rally in Game 1 of their series against the Baltimore Orioles came up just short as they lost the opener 7-5. But it was the seventh consecutive game in which the Jays had scored five or more runs against the Orioles.
So, who is Wednesday’s victim for Vladimir Guerrero and Co.? None other than Matt Harvey himself. To be fair to Harvey, he has actually pitched better than his 7.34 ERA, as evidenced by his 4.84 FIP, and he has pitched well in consecutive outings against the Astros and Blue Jays.
That said, opponents are still hitting .313 off Harvey this season and he has surrendered seven runs on 15 hits in 10 innings against the Jays this season. That shouldn’t be that shocking, considering the Jays lead the majors in batting average against right-handers and are second in OPS.
The other thing about Harvey starts is that he rarely goes beyond the fifth inning. He’ll then hand the ball to a Baltimore bullpen that ranks 24th in ERA and 22nd in opponent batting average. This is good value to back the Jays to eclipse their team total in this one.
Cubs Team Total Under 3.5 (-130)
The Philadelphia Phillies inked Zack Wheeler to a big contract prior to the 2020 season, and boy, does he look worth it now. The right-hander is a hell of a groove right now and will look to stay hot as he and the Phillies visit the Chicago Cubs.
Wheeler has become one of the big league’s most reliable starters, and it’s more than just his 2.03 ERA and 0.94 WHIP that’s impressive. He also has recorded a quality start 10 of the last 11 times he has taken the mound. Over that stretch, his ERA has been 1.31 with a 0.85 WHIP and he's limited opponents to a .187 batting average.
That's bad news for a Cubbies team that has struggled to score. Chicago ranks dead last in the MLB when it comes to batting average against right-handed pitching and has scored three runs or fewer 17 times in their last 22 games. Despite last night’s 10-run outburst (in a 15-10 loss), this trend is primed to get back on track with Wheeler on the mound.
Yankees Team Total Under 4.5 (-125)
The New York Yankees looked like their old selves in a 12-1 blasting of the Seattle Mariners in the opener a three-game set at T-Mobile Park, but before you run around screaming the “Bronx Bombers are back,” let’s use some caution.
The Yankees predictably took advantage of a slumping Justus Sheffield, thanks in part to a first-inning three-run bomb from Giancarlo Stanton. Things may be a little tougher tonight going against the Mariners' Yusei Kikuchi.
The M’s lefty is dealing right now, pitching to a 1.87 ERA, and is limiting opponents to a .179 batting average over his last seven starts. That includes wins over the Blue Jays, White Sox, Rays, and A’s. So, this run has been no joke.
Even with yesterday’s outburst, the Yanks still rank 23rd in scoring, 15th in OPS and 16th in BABIP against left-handed starters this season. With opponents scoring three runs or fewer five times in Kikuchi’s last seven starts, we like the Yankees to come back down to Earth and stay below their team total in this one.
