Baseball fans hope for another thrilling game as the Los Angeles Dodgers (19-10) host the Miami Marlins (12-16) for Game 2 of a three-game series on Tuesday night.
Monday’s opener was one to remember as LA secured a 7-6 victory thanks to Tommy Edman’s 10th-inning walk-off.
For my Marlins vs. Dodgers predictions and MLB picks for Tuesday, April 29, I’m bearish on LA’s chances in a bullpen game necessitated by starting pitching injuries.
Marlins vs Dodgers prediction
My Marlins vs Dodgers best bet: Marlins +0.5 — first five innings (-104 at FanDuel)
The Los Angeles Dodgers have nearly unrivaled starting pitching depth, but it’s not unlimited.
The arms are running thin after Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow hit the IL with shoulder injuries. Shohei Ohtani isn’t expected to make his return to the mound until after the All-Star Break, Gavin Stone and Clayton Kershaw have long-term injuries, and Roki Sasaki and Yoshinobu Yamamoto are getting more than five days' rest after every start
Tony Gonsolin makes his return on Wednesday, leaving Tuesday as a bullpen game.
That’s unfortunate timing, as the bullpen has been utilized heavily lately. Glasnow lasted a single inning on Sunday, and the arm barn was needed for 4 ⅔ innings yesterday in a 10-inning game.
Seven different relievers have thrown 20+ pitches in the last three days. This creates a difficult situation for Dave Roberts to manage in the short term.
The Miami Marlins are in better shape on the mound as former NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara gets the nod.
His return from Tommy John has been a bumpy road (6.56 ERA), but there’s still a lot to like about his game, and he should improve going forward.
The 29-year-old hurler has induced a groundball a whopping 59.2% of the time, putting him in the 93rd percentile.
He still has the goods, posting a Stuff+ of 109 that ranks him 13th out of 133 starting pitchers who have thrown at least 20 innings.
Miami has its ace on the mound while LA is forced into a bullpen game with a taxed group of relievers.
I don’t trust Miami’s bullpen (4.41 ERA, 5.07 FIP), but the First 5 Innings market is appealing.

Marlins vs Dodgers same-game parlay (SGP)
Believing in the Marlins required some faith in Alcantara to revert to positively impacting his ball club. It’d be unfair to expect an immediate return to dominance after Tommy John, but there are enough positive signs that I’m buying his ability to limit the Dodgers’ run-scoring on Tuesday.
Where will the offense come from? Outfielder Jesus Sanchez has strong underlying numbers this season, so I’m betting on him recording 2+ total bases.
The 6-foot-4 Sanchez has a .389 xwOBA and .529 xSLG through 49 plate appearances. He’s barreling the ball (13.8%) and has good bat speed.
