The Milwaukee Brewers host the San Francisco Giants in the opening matchup of this three-game series at American Family Field. MLB odds list Milwaukee as a -165 favorite, while the total sits at 8.5.

My Giants vs. Brewers predictions target the total in this National League matchup.

Read on for my MLB picks for Friday, August 22.

Giants vs Brewers prediction

Giants vs Brewers best betOver 8.5 (-105)

The Milwaukee Brewers boast one of the best lineups in baseball. Entering this matchup, the Brewers rank in the top three in runs scored per game, hits per game, batting average (BA) and on-base percentage (OBP).

That success is likely to continue against left-hander Carson Whisenhunt, who takes the mound for the San Francisco Giants.

Whisenhunt is considered one of the Giants’ top prospects, though that distinction comes within a relatively weak farm system. He has struggled in his limited opportunities at the top level.

Through three starts, Whisenhunt carries a 5.02 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. His underlying metrics suggest those struggles may continue.

If he officially qualified, he would rank near the bottom of the league in expected ERA (xERA), average exit velocity, barrel rate and hard-hit rate.

The good news for Whisenhunt is that he may receive solid run support against Milwaukee’s José Quintana. A prime regression candidate, Quintana ranks in the bottom third of the league in xERA, expected batting average (xBA) and hard-hit rate.

That regression could come to fruition against San Francisco, especially considering the current Giants roster boasts a .411 slugging percentage (SLG) and .413 expected slugging percentage (xSLG) through 61 combined plate appearances against Quintana.

Giants vs Brewers same-game parlay (SGP)

Continuing the fade of Quintana, his biggest weakness has been his inability to generate swings-and-misses. He ranks in the 29th percentile in chase rate, fourth percentile in whiff rate and 11th percentile in strikeout rate.

Meanwhile, Whisenhunt also ranks in the bottom half of the league in strikeout rate.
