The Los Angeles Dodgers will look to extend their three-game winning streak when they face the New York Mets in the second game of their weekend set at Citi Field.

New York has struggled as of late, but a positive pitching matchup has me picking it to win at home tonight in my Dodgers vs. Mets predictions.

Let’s break down this matchup between two of the top teams in the National League in my free MLB picks for Saturday, May 24.

Dodgers vs Mets prediction

My Dodgers vs Mets best bet: Mets moneyline (-120 at BetMGM)

The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets faced off in last year’s NLCS, and early this season, the two teams with the biggest payrolls in MLB got off to fast starts.

New York has struggled recently, but this is still a marquee matchup. That was evidenced in Friday’s showdown, which Los Angeles won 7-5 in 13 innings.

The Mets should benefit from a better pitching matchup tonight — not to mention a longer-lasting one, as both starters left in the third inning due to a rain delay last night.

David Peterson continues to impress in 2025, putting up a 2.86 ERA and a solid 3.55 FIP over his first nine starts.

While the new, more successful version of Peterson we’ve seen over the last two years isn’t much of a strikeout pitcher, he’s done a better job of avoiding hard-hit balls — giving up just four homers in 50 1/3 innings of work in 2025.

In his last five starts, Peterson has held every opponent to two earned runs or less. He’s also gone a full six innings in his last three starts, and that will be important coming a night after New York had to go deep into its bullpen, using nine different pitchers in last night’s marathon.

The Dodgers are in a similar situation, having used eight pitchers on Friday after Clayton Kershaw was forced out of the game after two innings of work. But they might not have the luxury of a starter that can go deep.

Tony Gonsolin has thrown just 20 innings over his first four starts this season as he returns from Tommy John surgery. He’s not ramping up, either: Gonsolin has thrown five innings or less in his last three starts, including a four-inning performance against the Los Angeles Angels on May 18 that saw him allow four earned runs on four hits and five walks.

While bleeding on his thumb didn’t help in that last start, Gonsolin hasn’t been overly impressive this season, posting a 4.05 ERA and allowing four homers in those 20 innings. It’s the lack of length on a night where Los Angeles will need its SP to eat some innings that has me most concerned.

There are two possibilities: Gonsolin tries to go significantly deeper than he has of late, or the Dodgers go to the bullpen early a night after watching relievers toss 11 innings.

Either way, that’s not a recipe for success against a Mets lineup that’s just begging to break out again.

Dodgers vs Mets same-game parlay (SGP)

Mets moneyline

Over 8.5

Pete Alonso Over 0.5 RBI

These offenses aren’t going to be held in check all night long, and even with some solid pitchers on tap, I’m expecting both teams to score some runs. With the total at 8.5 runs, I’m taking the Over.

The Mets will need their core hitters to perform better tonight to grab the win, and Pete Alonso should be at the heart of that effort. The Polar Bear has cooled off lately, but he picked up an RBI last night even without a hit.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
