The Milwaukee Brewers host the St. Louis Cardinals in the final matchup of this three-game series at American Family Field.

My Cardinals vs. Brewers predictions focus on the total in this NL Central matchup.

Read on for my MLB picks for Sunday, September 14.

Cardinals vs Brewers prediction

Cardinals vs Brewers best bet: Over 8.5 (-120)

Right hander Miles Mikolas takes the mound for the St. Louis Cardinals and should serve as a good fade candidate. Through 28 starts this season, Mikolas is 7-10 with a 4.84 ERA and 1.32 WHIP.

His underlying metrics are even worse. Entering this matchup, Mikolas owns a 5.34 expected ERA (xERA) and .285 expected batting average (xBA). He also ranks in the third percentile in strikeout rate and fourth percentile in barrel rate.

These woes are likely to continue against the Milwaukee Brewers. Over the past six meetings, Mikolas is 2-3 with a 4.15 ERA and 1.30 WHIP against the Brewers.

On the other side, Milwaukee ranks in the Top 10 in runs scored per game, hits per game, on-base percentage (OBP), and OPS.

Meanwhile, the Brewers hand the ball to lefty Jose Quintana. Despite some solid surface-level results this year, Quintana ranks in the bottom third of the league in xERA, xBA, barrel rate, and hard-hit rate.

That expected regression could occur against St. Louis. Over his past nine meetings with the Cardinals, Quintana has posted a 5.40 ERA and 1.59 WHIP.

Cardinals vs Brewers same-game parlay (SGP)

Quintana has particularly struggled in the strikeout department. This season, he ranks in the eighth percentile in strikeout rate, sixth percentile in whiff rate, and 31st percentile in chase rate.

Meanwhile, Mikolas has recorded two or fewer strikeouts in four of his past five starts.
