The Milwaukee Brewers are coasting, leading the NL Central by 7 1/2 games, but with their recent play, perhaps they’re coasting a bit too much.
My Brewers vs. Rangers predictions break down why both pitchers should shine, but why Milwaukee’s young righty may get the last laugh.
Without further ado, let’s hand out some MLB picks for Tuesday, September 9.
Brewers vs Rangers prediction
Brewers vs Rangers best bet: Brewers moneyline (-105)
The Milwaukee Brewers got a great start out of Jose Quintana on Monday night in what amounted to a loss, and now they’ll be hoping to catch lightning in a bottle with Chad Patrick on Tuesday.
The rookie is expected to be recalled to start this game after making two turns through the rotation down on the farm. He struck out five over six scoreless frames with three walks and two hits against him, and in his most recent start five days ago, he lasted just 3 2/3 innings but struck out seven batters with two runs charged against him on six hits.
The right-hander hasn’t had the worst season in the world at the Big League level, pitching to a 3.60 ERA in 106 innings with a positive 23.9% strikeout rate. He’s a prototypical power pitcher, leaning on a big fastball and pitching to plenty of fly balls with a respectable sub-8% walk rate to boot.
The Rangers aren’t a stellar matchup for Patrick as a team, which rarely strikes out and owns a .191 isolated power in the last two weeks, but this ballpark should work in his favor, considering Texas has employed plenty of fly-ballers to play to their spacious outfield.
On the opposite end, Jack Leiter has been a largely similar pitcher to Patrick. He’s lacked consistency when it comes to pitching successfully to contact through the air, and he’s also owned a far inferior strikeout to walk ratio, but he’s shone at home with a 3.09 ERA.
Milwaukee’s offense looked dreadful on Monday and has looked weak at the dish with a .158 ISO in the past two weeks — but like the Rangers, it can make contact and limit strikeouts.
The Brewers are also a borderline Top-10 team by OPS against fly-ballers, while Texas is down near the bottom of the league, and I’m seeing plenty more I like in Patrick than Leiter. That gives the Brewers the edge.
Brewers vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)
I do like betting on both arms here, even though I'm seeing more I like in the Brewers. Both teams rank in the Top 6 of outfield defense by outs above average, and with both offenses looking flat on Monday, there’s a great chance this is another low-scoring game.
We have to trust in this park, and similarly, we have to trust Patrick. I don’t care how stingy the Rangers are with strikeouts; this guy has done it at the Big League level and just racked up 12 strikeouts in just over nine innings down in the minors. This is a very attainable number and one he’s now hit in four straight starts between Triple-A and the show.
