Trea Turner and the Philadelphia Phillies steamrolled the Atlanta Braves in their series opener, plating 19 runs in a blowout victory.
My Braves vs. Phillies predictions expect Philadelphia’s leadoff hitter to enjoy plenty more success in Game 2.
Let’s take a closer look at my MLB picks for Friday, August 29.
Braves vs Phillies prediction
Braves vs Phillies best bet: Trea Turner Over 1.5 total bases (-110)
Trea Turner piled up three bases in the Philadelphia Phillies series-opening win, and he’s in a great spot to do it again Friday against Bryce Elder.
The Atlanta Braves right-hander is in the midst of another miserable season, with his ERA sitting well above 6.00 for the second year in a row.
Elder throws a boatload of sinkers and sliders, utilizing one of the two pitches more than 90% of the time when facing right-handed batters like Turner.
That plays right into the hands of Turner. He owns a sparkling .337 average against the sinker, while hitting .288 — with an ISO near .300, I might add — against sliders from right-handed pitchers.
Unsurprisingly, Turner has a strong track record against Elder. He has hit safely in three of seven at-bats, picking up a double and a homer along the way.
Turner has averaged 2.2 bases per game in wins this season, and with a massive pitching advantage, the Phillies are approaching -200 favorites in this spot.
Look for Turner’s bat to do plenty of damage once again.
Braves vs Phillies same-game parlay (SGP)
J.T. Realmuto is a singles machine. He has recorded at least one in 57% of his games this season and 61% when facing off against a right-handed starter.
Win or lose, I like Ronald Acuna Jr.’s chances of making noise for the Braves. He’s hitting .281 against left-handed pitching this season and has excelled against sinkers thrown by lefties, which is Ranger Suarez’s most-used pitch.
