Braves vs Brewers prediction
My Braves vs Brewers best bet: Braves moneyline (-124 at DraftKings)
The Atlanta Braves are just 20th in wRC+ over the last two weeks, carrying a diminished .140 Isolated Power into this one and a .224 batting average to boot. The Braves have at least walked in 10.3% of plate appearances, but they’re also striking out at a 23.7% clip, which has stymied their rhythm at the dish.
The good news here is that Milwaukee Brewers SP Quinn Priester isn’t one for strikeouts. He’s running a 15.2% punchout rate over his brief three-year career, and while he did make some strides in the walks column last season, he’s back up to an 11.1% walk rate this year.
This is not a great matchup for Priester given the Braves’ continued efforts to walk and their lurking power bats which have been starting to find some consistency, and that should mean a win here behind Grant Holmes.
The righty has looked like a reliable arm to this point, running a 3.99 xERA helped by a .238 xBA, and his heavy ground-ball rate has been just what the doctor ordered for a Braves team which ranks third in infield Outs Above Average.
Holmes is running a 24.3% strikeout rate, hurt a bit by his 10.4% walk rate. While the Brewers have excelled in these areas of late, they haven’t done a great job of that for most of the season.
On top of that, they’ve got absolutely no power to speak of with a .138 ISO, and that’s where Holmes has been his most vulnerable with his xSLG up to a tough .418 this year.
Braves vs Brewers same-game parlay (SGP)
While his last start ended after just 3 2/3 innings, I do believe Holmes should comfortably complete six in this one. His eye for ground-balls, coupled with the Brewers’ inability to hit for power and the Braves’ elite infield defense, should mean plenty of quick outs — and an efficient pitch count through the first five innings.
He had recorded 17 or more outs in four straight prior to that disaster, which was brought on by two Diamondbacks home runs. We know the Brewers aren’t hitting for power, so there’s not much to fear.
I’m also keen on Austin Riley here, who’s hit .333 and is slugging .492 against ground-ball pitchers like Priester this year. He’s doubled in three straight games and now has four multi-hit efforts in his last five, so it’s hard not to love him here.
