The Toronto Blue Jays have the AL East title in their sights, and they’re not letting up. Toronto has won six games in a row to increase its lead in the division to five games (six when you count the tiebreaker).
Now, they’ll go for a rare series win in Tampa Bay when they hand the ball to Kevin Gausman for Game 3 of this four-game set, and my Blue Jays predictions and MLB picks are backing the right-hander to stay hot in this matchup at Steinbrenner Field on Wednesday night.
Blue Jays predictions for September 17
- Best bet
Gausman Over 5.5 strikeouts
(-133 at BetVictor) - SGP pick
Gausman Over 5.5 strikeouts
Guerrero Jr. Over 0.5 RBI
Springer Over 1.5 total bases
(+550 at BetVictor)
Today’s Blue Jays best bet: All Gaus, no brakes
Kevin Gausman Over 5.5 strikeouts (-133 at BetVictor)
Kevin Gausman is looking more and more like a guy you’d be very confident handing the ball to in a playoff series.
The veteran right-hander is ramping up toward the postseason, pitching some of his best games of the season. Gausman has allowed just two earned runs on 10 hits while striking out 22 batters over his last three starts.
That includes a complete-game shutout of the Astros in his last start. The current run has dropped Gausman’s expected ERA to 3.67, and it's been fueled by an uptick in velocity and control of his fastball. I like Gausman to stay hot tonight.
The Tampa Bay Rays, while always pesky, haven’t been the most potent lineup in the second half of the season. Tampa Bay ranks 23rd in batting average and OPS while having the third-highest strikeout rate in baseball since coming out of the All-Star break.
Gausman has a moderate strikeout prop sitting at 5.5 in this matchup. That’s a number he’s eclipsed six times in his last 10 games and three of his last four overall. He’s also completed at least seven innings six times during that stretch, which means plenty of opportunities to rack up the punchouts in Tampa on Wednesday night.
Today’s Blue Jays same-game parlay (SGP)
Kevin Gausman Over 5.5 strikeouts
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Over 0.5 RBI
George Springer Over 1.5 total bases
Who else has led the Blue Jays? Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer, of course.
Vladdy ranks in the 100th percentile in expected batting average and the 93rd in expected slugging percentage, with 23 home runs and 81 RBI, and I like him to drive in a run tonight.
Guerrero got back on track last night, collecting another two knocks, including an RBI single. He now has 24 hits already in September.
Then let’s add Springer to go Over 1.5 total bases. Springer continues to have a season to remember. After yet another three hits last night, he’s now hitting .305 with a .946 OPS. He’s topped 1.5 total bases in three of his last four games overall.
