Mad Max Scherzer is back.
The 41-year-old Toronto Blue Jays starter is rounding into form over his last number of starts. He’s completed 6+ innings in three straight, twice reaching an upper-90s pitch count.
Scherzer’s gone Over this outs-recorded number in three straight, sporting a 2.84 ERA with 21 strikeouts over that stretch, averaging 19 outs per game.
Additionally, the Jays veteran has pitched extremely well against the Chicago Cubs’ current lineup. Chicago hitters own a combined .218 batting average with a lowly .272 OBP against Scherzer, which means he’s been efficient and kept players off the base paths while recording a lot of outs.
Moreover, the Jays have gotten the Cubs’ offense at the right time. The bats have been ice cold, as the team ranks 29th in OPS in August, sitting in the bottom five of most offensive metrics over this stretch.
With Scherzer’s play trending up and the Cubs bats trending down, I expect a deeper outing from the Jays tonight.

I’m expecting a low-scoring pitcher's duel tonight with Scherzer taking on 2025 All-Star Matthew Boyd, who’s 11-5 with a sparkling 2.45 ERA, tossing three scoreless outings over his last five starts.
There is one Blue Jays hitter who’s hot and has had success against Boyd - albeit in a microscopic sample size - and that’s Bo Bichette, who is 2-for-2 against him with a home run.
Bichette's also the MLB hits leader this season with 145 knocks, ranking in the 100th percentile in xBA as well.
