Blue Jays Picks, Predictions & Best Bets vs the Cubs for August 13

Kevin Gausman has looked more like his dominant self since the All-Star break, clearing his strikeout total in three of four games. Against a scuffling Cubs offense, the Blue Jays ace will make it four of five.

Kevin Gausman is trying to prove that he can be the ace for the Toronto Blue Jays come October, and he’s starting to ramp up his play down the stretch. I expect that to continue tonight against a struggling Chicago Cubs lineup.

Blue Jays predictions for August 13

Today’s Blue Jays best bet: Gaus on the fire

Kevin Gausman Over 5.5 strikeouts (-120 at BetVictor)

The Toronto Blue Jays turn to Kevin Gausman tonight as the Birds host the Chicago Cubs at the Rogers Centre.

The Jays' veteran righty is starting to put things together as the summer winds down, posting a 2.42 ERA over four starts since the All-Star break.

He’s pitching with confidence again, and it shows in his strikeout totals. Pre All-Star break, Gausman averaged 5.5 strikeouts per game. He’s now delivering 7.8 per game over his last four starts, clearing his posted total in three of those outings, and I expect him to do it again tonight.

The Cubs strike out at a 26% clip against the splitter, Gausman’s calling card, and went down on strikes nine times last night.

Overall, the Cubs' offense has been league-average since the All-Star break with a 101 WRC+, ranking middle of the pack in batting average and 21st in OPS. They’ve also scored the third-fewest runs over that stretch, too, averaging 4.1 runs per game.

With Gausman trending up and the Cubbies' bats trending down, I expect the Jays' ace to continue mowing hitters down to go Over 5.5 strikeouts.

Today’s Blue Jays same-game parlay (SGP)

Kevin Gausman Over 5.5 strikeouts

Kevin Gausman Under 2.5 earned runs

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Over 1.5 total bases

I’ll continue to back the Jays’ starter and take Gausman to stay Under 2.5 earned runs tonight against the Cubs. The right-hander has hit the Under in three of his last four outings. Additionally, Chicago’s offense is struggling to score, ranking 28th in runs scored since the All-Star break.

For the final leg of my SGP, I’ll keep riding Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s hot bat and go Over 1.5 total bases. He’s coming off another multi-hit start and is averaging 2.72 bases per game over his last 25. Cade Horton throws a heavy dose of the four-seam fastball, which Guerrero Jr. owns a .346 average and a .617 slug-rate against the pitch.
