Athletics vs Rangers Prediction, Picks & Odds —Wednesday, July 23

The A's are circling the drain and are just what the Rangers need as they try to get back into the playoff race. With a resurgent Patrick Corbin toeing the rubber, Texas takes tonight's game by at least two runs.

At no point this season have the A's been mistaken as a quality team, but they have fallen particularly low of late, now 18 games back in the AL West. The Texas Rangers have little in the way of valid postseason aspirations, but at least they're not the A’s.

My A’s vs. Rangers predictions and MLB picks trust Texas to continue a recent hot streak, in some part because the A's should make that easy at first pitch at 8:05 ET on Wednesday, July 23.

Athletics vs Rangers prediction

My Athletics vs Rangers best bet: Rangers -1.5 (+150 at Caesars)

The Texas Rangers cannot quite see the playoff picture yet, but if they can just keep playing the A’s, they would be a sure thing. Texas’ success actually predates this series, winning two of three against Detroit over the weekend as well as two of three at Houston last week.

More impressive than winning five of their last six games and seven of their last nine, the Rangers have also notched the run line in all seven of those outright victories. They are winning with relative ease, including against quality opponents.

The A’s are not a quality opponent. They have lost their last three games, including two against these Rangers, and four of their last five. Worse yet, all four of those losses have also come by multiple runs.

The pitching tonight should not reverse these trends. Most notably, Texas left-hander Patrick Corbin has thrown three straight gems, giving up four total runs across those three starts while adding 15 strikeouts. Corbin probably won't throw more than six innings, but he should shut down the A's lineup in those six innings.

Athletics vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)

Rangers -1.5

Patrick Corbin Over 4.5 strikeouts

Over 8.5

Corbin has thrown at least five strikeouts in four of his last five starts. Against the A’s, that should continue with ease.

Expecting a high-scoring game then becomes questionable until realizing A’s starter JP Sears has given up at least three earned runs in four of his last six starts. Three against Sears in the first four innings would have Texas on the way to both the run line and the Over.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
