It’s a massive series in Texas and a rivalry renewing when the Houston Astros face off against the Texas Rangers.

Coming into today, these two teams are in the heat of a playoff race. The Rangers are a half-game behind the final wild card spot, trailing the Seattle Mariners, and the Astros lead the division and that same Mariners team by three games. We expect Houston to extend that advantage tonight.

My Astros vs. Rangers predictions break it down here as I bring you my MLB picks when the two teams meet Saturday, September 6.

Astros vs Rangers prediction

Pitching matchups don’t get much better than this.

Jacob deGrom gets the start, and he’s been, well, Jacob deGrom. He’s had a few spotty performances that are probably an indicator of Father Time creeping up. Still, he comes into this matchup with sparkling numbers and an ERA just under 2.5.

Hunter Brown will take the mound for the Houston Astros this evening and has been one of my favorite pitchers to watch all season. Every metric you check yields another impressive result; however, my favorite is his hard-hit rate and average exit velocity.

He ranks in the top 90th percentile in each metric, simply not giving up hard-hit balls. That will be the difference here.

One of the chief reasons the Texas Rangers are currently battling tooth-and-nail for a playoff position rather than being in one is because of the hitting profile of the team.

It’s a lineup with a little too much all-or-nothing in it, with bats like Jake Burger and Rowdy Tellez. That’s why they have the unique distinction of being a team with the fifth-lowest batting average in baseball but an above-average barrel rate.

In other words, they are overly reliant on the hard-hit ball rather than stringing hits together. That won’t work against Brown, and I’m simply backing him to outpitch a future Hall of Famer.

Over the years, that’s not always been the best course of action, but today is an exception.

Astros vs Rangers same-game parlay (SGP)

My two legs being added for the same-game parlay are quite correlated.

I like Brown to go over his strikeout number for the same reason I like the Astros to win the game: the all-or-nothing swings in the Rangers lineup.

In addition, I projected a total of 6.4 for this matchup, so I’m happy to take the half-run of perceived value to wrap things up.
