MLB All-Star Game Picks and Predictions: AL Is The Dog, Despite Seven Straight ASG Wins

The American League has recently dominated the National League in the All-Star Game, winning seven straight times and going 19-3-1 in the last 23 games overall. The AL is the MLB betting underdog in 2021 — which is too tempting for us to pass up.

MLB sharp money and line movement report

By Patrick Everson

This line opened near a pick 'em Saturday night at William Hill US, with the National League -108 and the American League -102. Early Monday morning, the moneyline nudged to NL -110/AL even money, and that's where the price remains at 5:30 p.m. ET Tuesday, two hours ahead of first pitch. The American League is actually landing the bulk of tickets and money, at 53 percent and 63 percent, respectively. "National League is a slight favorite, pretty much because they get last at-bat," WillHill US director of trading Nick Bogdanovich said. "With the game right around pick ’em, I’m not expecting too big of a decision one way or the other. There have been years where one side has been favored by 30, 40, 50 cents, but the rosters and the pitching look pretty even here." The total moved from 10.5 (Over -120) to 11 (Under -120) this morning, and it's now 11 flat (-110) on two-way play, with 58 percent of tickets on the Over and 54 percent of money on the Under. "When it’s warm at Coors, just average fly balls become home runs," Bogdanovich said. "We’re dead even to the total, and we’ve been getting good action on it. With the Coors factor and all the pitchers throwing, the total is definitely intriguing in this game."

Betting trend to know

The Under is 11-3 in MLB All-Star games dating back to 2006 (as far back as our MLB All-Star Game betting data goes).

Moneyline pick

Yes, the American League has dominated the National League in the MLB All-Star game for a while now, with the Junior Circuit winning the Midsummer Classic seven straight times and going 19-3-1 in the last 23 MLB All-Star games overall.

That is pretty incredible when you think about it, but bettors are thinking the NL will end that skid as they are slight favorites as of early Monday afternoon.

This year’s edition of the game should be an intriguing one as a new generation of young stars takes center stage in the thin air of Colorado — and none are more intriguing than Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani.

The two-way star became the first player in MLB history to be selected as both a hitter and a pitcher and he is the betting favorite to win AL MVP. Ohtani, who is also the favorite to win the Home Run Derby, leads an AL lineup featuring the likes of Vlad Guerrero Jr., Xander Bogaerts, and Aaron Judge.

On the other side of the diamond, the NL will be led by San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. He will be joined by Juan Soto, a pair of raking-Reds outfielders in Jesse Winker and Nick Castellanos, and of course the Nolan Arenado return to Coors Field

And while both sides have had to make some significant injury replacements, it is the NL who seems to be more hampered heading into this matchup. They will be without Braves star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr., who suffered a devastating knee injury before the break, and will be without arguably the NL’s top three starters this season with Jacob deGrom, Brandon Woodruff, and Kevin Gausman all missing the game.

With those guys out, the pitching will be close to even while we’re giving a slight edge to the AL when it comes to hitters. That means we will be taking the value with the AL as slight underdogs and betting them to make it eight in a row over the NL.

PREDICTION: American League (+105)

Over/Under pick

The American League hasn’t been the only thing dominating All-Star games over the past few years: The Under is also a remarkable 11-3 over the last 14 All-Star games. An interesting number when you consider this is a coming together of the games’ best players. But it appears the old baseball adage holds true even in the Midsummer Classic: “Great pitching beats great hitting.”

There has been an average of 6.86 total runs scored per game over this 14-game stretch and there have been double-digit runs scored just once in that time. That was an 8-6 AL victory in 2018 — which needed extra innings.

That game also only had eight runs scored heading into the bottom of the ninth, so it’s fair to say pitchers have had the edge in the Midsummer Classic in recent years.

The total for this year’s game is at a high 11. How high? Well, it's the highest total we have seen in an All-Star Game since 2008. There are a few reasons for this. One, the game is being played in the thin air of Coors Field. And two, there are rumors that the balls will be juiced for this game. So, under the right circumstances, a number like that can easily be taken down.

That said, this number is still high enough for us to side with the Under. Even with the starters that are missing from this game, the "replacements" like Max Scherzer and Walker Buehler aren’t too shabby.

Another thing to consider is that we are in the midst of a season that is on pace for the most strikeouts per game and lowest team batting average in MLB history. As we said, we won’t be shocked if this one goes Over... but the number is too tempting to pass on the Under.

PREDICTION: Under 11 (-110)

Team to score first pick

What more can be said about Ohtani that hasn’t been said already? The first-ever player to be selected as both a hitter and a pitcher. He competed in Monday’s home run derby. He will be the starting pitcher for the American League. And is expected to stay in the game afterward.

But if there is a flaw to the two-way superstar’s game, sometimes it takes him an inning or two to settle into his starts. Ohtani has a 9.95 ERA in the first inning this season — his highest ERA in any inning this season. This is due mostly due to him needing some time to find his control, as Ohtani has surrendered 15 walks in 12 2-3 innings.

Countering Ohtani to start the game is the Nationals Max Scherzer. Mad Max, on the other hand, has a 2.76 ERA and is limiting opponents to a .175 batting average in the first inning this season. This means there is some really nice value in backing the NL to score first.

PREDICTION: National League (+140)
