The manager and business partner of one of the NBA’s all-time great players illegally wagered on sports.

Maverick Carter, the co-founder of SpringHill Entertainment, admitted to federal authorities that he wagered on NBA games using an illegal bookie, according to The Washington Post.

Carter’s revelation came during a November 2021 interview with federal agents regarding an investigation into Wayne Nix — a bookie who operated an offshore sports-betting ring. As a result of his criminal enterprise, Nix has pleaded guilty to charges related to the operation.

“In 2021 and before 38 states and the District of Columbia legalized sports betting, Maverick Carter was interviewed a single time by federal law enforcement regarding their investigation into Wayne Nix,” Carter’s spokesman, Adam Mendelsohn, told the Post. “Mr. Carter was not the target of the investigation, cooperated, was never charged, and never contacted again on the matter.”

Carter, who is a childhood friend and business partner of Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, admitted to placing roughly 20 wagers on football and basketball games that ranged between $5,000 to $10,000. The 42-year-old, who placed the bets over the course of a year, stated that he “could not remember placing any bets on the Lakers,” according to the probe.

Investigators also discovered that NBA legend Scottie Pippen also placed at least one wager with Nix. The bookie has also been linked to Michael Jordan and other high-profile athletes.

The NBA’s sports betting policy prohibits players, teams, and league officials from wagering on league games. However, no rule adheres to bets placed by player agents or managers. As a result of Carter’s illegal gambling, the NBA may reevaluate its current sports betting policy.
