Who can partake in Kansas sports betting?

Now that it’s possible to legally bet on sports in Kansas, it’s vital to remember that the legal age to do so is 21, the same as most other states. Additionally, bettors can sign up and register online anywhere within state lines.

21plus Legal age

Kansas sports betting is only allowed for bettors 21 and up.

21plus Mobile betting

Each of Kansas’ four commercial casinos is allowed to partner with up to three sportsbook operators. The Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission regulates all forms of online and mobile sports betting.

21plus Remote registration

Kansas has put remote registration into practice with online sports wagering fully underway. This means bettors can sign up, make deposits, and place wagers from anywhere in the state.

globe Within state borders

Kansas online sports betting is only accessible to those physically within state borders. Any licensed sportsbook that operates in Kansas must use geofencing technology to confirm the identities and whereabouts of its customers.

bank Retail sportsbooks

Four state-run commercial casinos in Kansas are allowed to take sports wagers on their properties: Boot Hill Casino & Resort in Dodge City, Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway in Kansas CityKansas Crossing Casino & Hotel in Pittsburg, and Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane. Additionally, the new law allows for sports betting at as many as 50 other brick-and-mortar locations.

percent Taxable winnings

A tax rate of 10% will be applied to all sports betting revenue in Kansas. Additionally, a federal tax of 24% is tacked onto gambling winnings in the U.S.

The pros and cons of Kansas sports betting

Thanks to its competition with Missouri acting as a driving force, Kansas legalized sports betting in 2022 and joined the ever-growing number of legitimate markets in the U.S. Although Colorado has long had an established market, the remainder of Kansas’ neighbors — Missouri, Oklahoma, and Nebraska — have yet to pass sports betting legislation into law.

While it’s impossible to say exactly what the landscape will look like until it’s taken shape, the outlook is promising.

How to start betting in Kansas

With the arrival of online and mobile sports betting, bettors can confirm wagers with Kansas sports betting sites from anywhere in the state. Some Sunflower State residents may also find themselves with nearby access to retail sportsbooks.

1

Select a sportsbook

Those interested in Kansas sports betting should get familiar with the options available to them. Every region has various regulations and sportsbook operators, so it’s valuable to pinpoint Kansas betting sites with bonuses, odds, and banking methods that suit personal needs.

2

Register online

Now that legal sports gambling has officially begun, bettors can create accounts with Kansas sportsbooks immediately. Doing so is relatively easy but can be made simpler by ensuring all relevant identification and funding information is nearby.

3

Claim a bonus

When a sportsbook goes live in a new location, it offers different types of promotions and sign-up bonuses. Some of the most common sportsbook sign-up bonuses include second-chance bets, deposit matches, and no-deposit bonuses. Make sure to always read the terms and conditions associated with any incentive. Additionally, most Kansas sportsbooks will require an initial minimum deposit to claim its welcome offer.

4

Deposit funds

Most Kansas sportsbooks make it extremely simple to deposit funds. There are now many sportsbook deposit and withdrawal methods available to Kansas bettors, including credit and debit cards, PayPal, direct bank transfers, and more.

5

Choose your bet types

Operators officially going live have clarified what specific bet types are available for Kansas sports bettors. The traditional options are all there: MoneylineOver/Unders (totals)point spreadsfuturesprop bets, and parlays.

6

Start betting

Following account registration, adding funds, and grabbing a bonus, it’s time to start betting. Before placing a wager, ensure you are well acquainted with your chosen Kansas sportsbooks and their terms and conditions.

7

Withdraw funds

Kansas sports betting sites may have different processes when it comes to withdrawals. Research your options before adding funds to an account, as it can be bothersome to win wagers and be unable to withdraw money promptly.

Reading the odds

Those looking to partake in Kansas sports betting will find that sportsbooks default to American odds. These are the moneyline odds most typically provided at legal U.S. sportsbooks. American odds reveal the favorite with a minus sign (ex. -200) and the underdog with a plus sign (ex. +150).

The odds for the favorite are shown as how much a player will have to wager to win $100. Conversely, the odds on the underdog are shown to display how much a player will win from a $100 wager.

For example, a $200 wager on the Kansas City Chiefs at -200 will pay $100 plus the original bet. Meanwhile, a $100 wager on a +150 underdog will pay $150 on top of the initial wager.

Visit our odds converter if you prefer to view odds as decimals or fractions. There, you can see odds displayed in American, decimal, and fractional formats.

Potential legal U.S. sports betting markets

Looking to do what Kansas just managed, there are still many states moving toward legal sports betting. These are the ones that may potentially generate their markets relatively soon:

Kansas sports betting history

First introduced in 2021, SB 84 was approved by the Senate and House on April 28, 2022, and signed into law less than two months later. Today, seven Kansas betting sites and four retail locations accept legal wagers.

2025: Kansas finally welcomes its seventh sportsbook — bet365 — into the fold.

2024: Fanatics Sportsbook replaces PointsBet in Kansas.

2023: Caesars Sportsbook opens its retail facility in the state at Kansas Crossing Casino in January, while DraftKings launches its retail sportsbook at Boot Hill Casino Resort just in time for March Madness.

2022: An amended SB 84 passes through the House and Senate in April. Gov. Laura Kelly signs the bill into law in June. Lawmakers establish Kansas sports betting rules in August, just weeks before the launch of legal wagering.

Kansas "soft launches" legal sports betting as six online sportsbook operators go live on Sept. 1. The official launch takes place on Sept. 8.

2021: SB 84 is introduced in the Senate. The Senate approves the sports betting bill, but the Kansas House Committee of the Whole votes against bringing legal betting to the Sunflower State.

2020: The Kansas Senate passes a bill — SB 283 — to legalize sports betting online and at the state's four casinos.

Meanwhile, the House proposes legislation — HB 2671 — that would see 1,200 lottery retailers offer legal, in-person wagering.

2018: Kansas lawmakers introduce several sports betting bills as they anticipate the fall of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). The Supreme Court confirms suspicions by overturning PASPA in May, allowing each state to legalize and regulate sports wagering.

Kansas sports betting conclusion

Kansas beating neighboring Missouri to the legal sports betting punch should be a massive boon for its burgeoning market. With just seven online sportsbooks, local bettors don't have the largest selection, but some of the best sports betting platforms in the country are represented in the Sunflower State.

With more operators on the way  Bally Bet and Golden Nugget are next up  state-wide remote registration, and the option to wager on nearly any sporting event, Kansas sports betting is off to a roaring start.
