Fanatics claimed that it was setting a new standard for sports betting by voiding bets on the Charlotte Hornets center.

Fanatics Sportsbook, Underdog and PrizePicks are honoring all bettors who were left frustrated by the Charlotte Hornets’ shock decision to bench Naz Reid on Wednesday. But the same can’t be said for every gambling operator.

Reid played 13 minutes in a first-half loss to the Detroit Pistons before head coach Charles Lee benched him for the entire second half.

Key Takeaways
  • All bets and selections involving Reid were voided by some companies.
  • Reid was surprisingly held out for failing to meet the team’s “standards.”
  • Fanatics claimed that it was setting a new standard for sports betting by voiding the bets.

Reid started all five games for the Hornets in his first year in Charlotte, playing a minimum of 25 and an average of 31 minutes prior to Wednesday.

Everything seemed to be operating under the status quo — Reid had seven points, six rebounds, and one block when he was substituted for Brandon Miller with 3:19 remaining in the second quarter. But when the Hornets returned for the second half, a fully available Reid was left sitting on the bench.

Reid’s mysterious disappearance left many bettors and prediction traders furious and searching for answers. His health availability also meant that he didn’t automatically meet the criteria for bet protections offered by sportsbooks, through which bettors are refunded if players are injured early in games and cannot return.

Coach Lee provided clarity on Reid’s situation during a postgame press conference, saying simply that the center’s performance did not meet the team’s expectations.

“Unfortunately, Naz (Reid) didn't meet our standards in the first half, and at halftime we made the decision that he wouldn't play in the second half. But I look forward to him meeting those standards come next game,” he said.

The Hornets held a five-point lead when Reid exited the game for the final time. They ended up losing, 97-89.

Setting a new precedent

Although not obligated to do so, Underdog said shortly after the game finished that anyone who added Reid to their lineups had been “rescued.”

PrizePicks also said that the circumstances qualified for its reboot policy, meaning that all lineups with Reid were rebooted.

Fanatics Sportsbook also confirmed shortly after midnight on Thursday morning that it would void all Naz Reid prop bets, as well as parlay legs on which he was featured. It also claimed that, much like the Hornets, it was setting a “new” standard in the sports betting industry.

At the time of writing, none of FanDuel, DraftKings, or BetMGM, the leaders in American sports wagering, publicly shared that they were also voiding prop bets involving Reid. DraftKings explicitly stated that it would not void wagers involving Reid.

Lee’s comment indicates that Reid will be back in the lineup when the Hornets head to the nation’s capital to face the Washington Wizards on Friday. Despite Wednesday’s abbreviated appearance against the Pistons, Reid is still second on the Hornets in both points (17) and rebounds (8.8) per game.

Eyeing the top spot

Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin said during an episode of CNBC’s “Squawk Box” earlier this month that his ambition was to make Fanatics the largest sports betting company in America. His plan to achieve that largely centered around taking a customer-first approach through the use of FanCash, native currency that can be used for wagering, trading cards, and merchandise, injury protection, and innovative promotions.

Covering wagers on a coaching decision is off the beaten path for the sports betting industry, and it’s another example of Fanatics prioritizing customer loyalty.

Meanwhile, PrizePicks and Underdog — two of the leading fantasy operators — are taking proactive steps to remain in good favor with their customers. That’s despite both companies recently involving themselves in the booming prediction market industry, which has even superseded fantasy operations in several states.
