The province opened its competitive iGaming market last week with 22 additional operators, and now two more have already launched within the new regulatory framework.

Alberta has added a pair of online sports betting and internet casino gambling sites to its recently opened iGaming market.

According to the Alberta iGaming Corp., the “conduct and manage” entity for the province, PartyCasino and Sports Interaction are now among the "approved" operators for the regulated iGaming market.

The Alberta-facing sites of the two brands are now live as well and bear the AiGC’s seal of approval.

Key Takeaways
  • Alberta's regulated iGaming market added PartyCasino and Sports Interaction, increasing the number of approved apps and sites to 24 after opening with 22 entrants on July 13.
  • More than 100,000 Albertans signed up with participating platforms in the market's first week, with over 3.2 million geolocation checks recorded.
  • With no limit on operators and about 50 licensed entities already approved by the AGLC, Alberta is expected to see more online betting and casino brands launch soon.

The latest entrants bring the Alberta sports betting and iGaming market up to 24 newly provincially regulated sites, as 22 went live on the day the market opened.

On that day, July 13, Alberta went from a single provincially authorized iGaming platform, Play Alberta, to the multiple now that provincial regulators now oversee.

Geolocation technology company GeoComply reported that more than 100,000 Albertans signed up with its partners “right out of the gate,” with over 3.2 million geolocation checks conducted across the province in the first week of its competitive iGaming market.

The limit does not exist

The two new approved operators are no real surprise, as they had registered to participate in the regulated market. PartyCasino and Sports Interaction are also owned by Entain, which is a part-owner of a brand that went live in Alberta's iGaming market on day one, BetMGM.

Alberta also has no cap on the number of operators that can launch within its regulatory framework, and there are around 50 entities that have received licenses from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC), which also runs Play Alberta.

That suggests there will continue to be a steady trickle of new entrants into the Alberta market over the coming weeks. Brands such as BET99 and Betway are among those who will eventually join, and the AGLC has said operators already taking bets in the province but planning to transition into the regulated market (so-called "grey" entities) could have until Oct. 13 to make the switch.

For further proof of future growth, Ontario, which launched a competitive iGaming market in 2022 that Alberta’s is largely based on, continues to see new operators join more than four years after that market opened.

Hard Rock Bet, for example, launched in Ontario just this week

“We will continue to work with operators to strengthen compliance, develop social responsibility programming, and improve player protection tools,” AiGC CEO Dan Keene said in a press release last week. “This will only be possible through continued collaboration, confidence, and strong participation on a regulatory playing field.”
