I'm taking the four-time FedEx Cup champion, who won here most recently in 2022 after starting the tournament 6 strokes back of Scheffler. McIlroy rebounded from an atrocious outing in Memphis to finish third last week, while Scheffler later admitted to combating Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease for much of the week.
Scheffler is still the heavy favorite as he led the season-long FedEx Cup standings. I think some may be forgetting the new format for the Tour Championship that won't see him with any advantage.
This is a standard 72-hole event, so even long shots are live in the 30-man field, but McIlroy's course history is too much for me to look past.

💰 BMW Championship picks: Winners to bet
Pick 1: Rory McIlroy (9.8%)
Rory McIlroy's 48 career rounds played at East Lake Golf Club rank second to Adam Scott (52) as the most in this year's final-30 . field. A three-time winner of the Tour Championship — all at East Lake – McIlroy has averaged 2.49 true strokes gained on the field per round.
His last two victories here came while starting 5 and 6 strokes back of Scheffler in the season-long points race as well. With that starting disadvantage erased, McIlroy is the best course fit for the storied Donald Ross track, and he should be viewed as this week's favorite.
While we've lost some value in McIlroy's odds to win since the market opened, I'm less concerned with that this week than usual. This is our final golf event of the season. Let's cash a winner.
Pick 2: Wyndham Clark (5.4%)
Perhaps the only reason not to back Wyndham Clark this week is that he's coming off a win last week. But the FedEx Cup Playoffs help to maintain that motivation and keep players focused. Plus, Clark's first two wins this season came just four weeks apart. When he hits his groove, he can stay there.
Clark ranked second in last week's field in strokes gained: approach (1.38). He's in the top 35 on the PGA Tour this season in proximity from 200-plus yards and bogey avoidance. He has also averaged 2.68 strokes gained at East Lake, albeit across just eight competitive rounds.
Sleeper pick to win: Hideki Matsuyama (2.9%)
Hideki Matsuyama ranks eighth in our key stat of proximity to the pin from 200-plus yards for the 2026 golf season. His accuracy off the tee will set up the best possible approach angles into East Lake's large and elevated putting surfaces.
I'd slot Matsuyama closer to the 3.5% win probability given to Chris Gotterup, who makes just his second appearance in the Tour Championship this week.
Sleeper pick to win: Russell Henley (2.6%)
I'm going right back to one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour, as I believe East Lake to be well suited to Russell Henley's accuracy off the tee and approach to the greens. Henley has played 20 career rounds at East Lake and finished T4 and T2 the last two years, respectively.
He's the fourth-most accurate driver in this field over the last 12 rounds, and his 1.39 strokes gained: putting leads the field. Though he's not a long hitter off the tee or with his irons, he's eighth on Tour for the season in bogey avoidance.
Sleeper pick to win: Gary Woodland (1.5%)
The former U.S. Open champ returned to the PGA Tour's winner's circle this year at the Texas Children's Houston Open. He also improved from 152nd in the Official World Golf Ranking following a missed cut in The Players Championship to 42nd following last week's T4 finish in St. Louis.
He offers the best combination of driving distance and accuracy this week, with strokes gained across every key metric over his last 12 rounds.
I'd back Gary Woodland up to a 2.5% win probability, moving him ahead of J.J. Spaun, Tom Kim, and Justin Rose by the Kalshi odds.

Tom Kim has been a different golfer in the second half of this season since finishing third in the U.S. Open. He claimed a win, a T5, and a T12 in the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
His approach play and putting have been the biggest drivers of that success. Though he's only 30th for the season in Round 1 scoring average, he'll benefit from heading out in Thursday's first group when the course is dry, and the firm fairways will add some distance off the tee.
Gary Woodland 2.5%

Gary Woodland opened last week's BMW Championship with a 64 and added a Friday 65 to be near the top of the leaderboard before admitting to some pressure derailing his game ever so slightly over the weekend. Well, the pressure will be off on Thursday while playing alongside Ryan Gerard.
Woodland blends distance and accuracy perfectly off the tee, and he's been gaining strokes in all key aspects of his game. He's 11th for the season in Round 1 scoring average, and should get the better weather split on Thursday. He's also part of my Tour Championship long-shot picks.

I don't love Matt Fitzpatrick's tee time as I expect he'll be delayed by the weather and will lose some driving distance amid the soggy conditions. But it's good to hedge against the forecast, and he's my pick for the first-round leader from the final tee time in case it ends up being a nicer day at East Lake.

Originally built by Tom Bendelow in 1908, Donald Ross made East Lake Golf Club his with a 1913 redesign. That instituted many of the staple Ross features, including long and narrow fairways and large and elevated greens.
East Lake demands accuracy off the tee with pinched fairways. Carefully selecting your landing spot is essential for getting the optimal angle into the elevated greens, and holding position on the putting surfaces is key at risk of the steep runoffs down toward the large bunkers with squared faces.
Surprisingly, Zach Johnson holds the course record of -10, 60 from 2007. That shows that long hitters don't hold an advantage, as positioning and course management are the most important traits this week.
