Anyone that believes that the media & some of the inciteful rhetoric of folks like Limbaugh, Beck & Palin, etc don't have any influence on the the minds & emotions of folks with the potential of setting off unstable folks like this guy is out of touch. Especially in these economic times when anger/frustration is at a high point (& basic class/grace/civility may be at an all-time low) & the political discourse has become so partisan & vicious.

Obviously, you can't solely blame the actions of a 22 yr old with serious problems on rhetoric or a movemement alone, but in this environment someone even symbolically putting cross-hairs on folks like Palin did is beyond irresponsible IMO. If it continues like this, soon we'll have folks doing stuff like this thinking they're doing a great & noble thing for the country. Bad shit & I doubt this guy is much more nuts than alot of folks out there -

wow lets stop right there, lets not have a repeat of yesterday.  This guy pulled the trigger, nobody held a gun to his head.  So hes without a doubt the person responsible for this disgusting act and should get the needle for it.

Point was our society is helping to create these nutjobs, but that doesnt mean if they go out and do something like this, they arent the ones to blame, because they indeed are the one to blame. They got the gun and fired the shots.

He was probably a big Glenn Beck fan. He could stir up some anger in a simple fuck who can't tell the difference between entertainment and reality.

Definately not saying Ol Glenn should be yanked off the air, only that his entertaining style can have an impact on people like the shooter who obviously suffers from mental illness and extreme paranoia.

exactly  The shooter is without a doubt responsible for his actions, but theres alot of people in society who are edging these type of people on.  Its no differnt then if you keep teaching a dog to fight and bite everyday, at some point the dog will be a fighter and biter.

Point is alot of people in our society are easily influeneced by what others say, thats why all these other people should be careful about edging nutjobs like this guy on.

waltertaylor - didn't say I had any great answers or that this guy's not to blame & has to take responsibility. Also not in favor of pulling anyone off the air neccessarily. Just an observation of deeper societal problems that have been growing for a long time (with many factors involved) that eventually tend to find expression. Politicians & highly visible media figures should take note of it more than ever today & need to be responsible in what they say, that's all -

Not have books, music, movies, plays, shows that talk about certain subjects....should we wipe our history books clean of any violent references (JFK) for fear that some nut job might get an "idea"

I am seriously asking

lords - well, you can't go back to different times or cover up the truth & reality of how things in this country has evolved & developed - be it political, ethical, economic, family dynamics, etc. But there are many helpful things that can be done & explored. Personally, I think that the deeper brain research that's being done now is a very good thing.

To me, it's amazing that for all our medical & technological advancement over the yrs, that good brain scans only started to be done in the early 90's. While things like ADD & ADHD may be somewhat over dignosed for a period of time, the learning about the deep limbic system, thyroid/adrenal gland dysfunction/how it affects the brain & other brain disorders & what can help them (both naturally with diet/nutrition & with certain meds) is a great thing & can eliminate alot of needless suffering for many in terms of degrees of tension, anxiety, focus & learning ability, depression & a number of other things that can directly affect a person's life/behaviour for years on end.
