looking for insight into what might be the best options for me - I want to get a PDA/Internet Phone - main purpose is to go onto internet and access covers.com, matchbook.com, thegreek.com, and other sports gambling stat sites and sportsbooks

anyone have any opinions on what might be some of the best options?  looking for phone with fast internet speed, i.e. page downloads, score updates, etc

i think i might need to have Java enabled on my browser to access covers, not sure

thanks in advance for any help anyone may be able to provide

the i-phone is great, i can be out somwhere and place bets, get on covers, and check scores. it is the full iternet too, not the scaled down version available on most phones. it is a little slow, but not that bad.  it will access available w-fi networks as well which should speed it up. a spots bar near me has w-fi i have been meaning to try it out there. should be the perfect solution for football season.

i didn't have an i-pod so it was worth the $ for me, and it can work almost as well as a laptop.

yes, the iphone has a fully enabled browser, not a wap browser like 99 percent of cellphones.  the only drawback is their is no flash, which means certain animations/websites wont load, but that shouldnt matter much.

just left the apple store in king of prussia mall - covers.com is exactly like it appears on my home computer - i logged in and placed a wager on matchbook too - wasn't lightning fast, but wasn't too slow either - pretty impressed

anyone know how any Sprint PDA's work with covers.com and matchbook.com??

I have Sprint's new Mogul 6800 phone.  I can browse the forums on Covers but I can't post anything.  I'm going to load a couple of other browsers and see how they do.

I have the Treo 700wx but it's with Verizon and the only thing I can say is that I'm getting the Iphone.  Nothing wrong with the phone itself as a cell phone and PDA but the internet sucks.  It freezes on me when I'm opening some big web page.  I don't really know how the Sprint would be but from my past experience with Sprint, their internet speed is faster so you might have better experience.

May be it was just my luck that I ended up with a bad phone and other Treo users have better experience.

I bought the HTC Mogul from Sprint PCS today.  We'll see how it goes.  Seems pretty cool so far.  Any tips, lippsman?

I really like it, the only thing I don't like is the smaller screen size.  I was using a PPC 6600 in the past.  I guess they wanted this to be more of a phone instead of a PDA first. Also there is no backup software included with the phone like there was with the 6600 and 6700. Also, of couse I already commented on the browser.  You will need to get another browser if you want to post on covers.

Be careful of using the Wi-Fi and keeping the blue tooth turned on too much, it will eat battery life.

That all being said I think it's a great phone.  I see keeping this one till at least the end of 2009.

Lipps, quick question on the Mogul...I can't get web pages, covers for example, to be sized to my screen.  Everything is way too huge so I barely can see anything without scrolling all over the place.  Is there an easy way to have everything sized to the screen?

Yes, you can click on menu, view, then click on fit to screen or or one column.  I usually just scroll because when you click on one column it's just a jumble.  The interent on a phone is really just for a you have to get access for a specefic purpose.  Because cruising on them is a real pain in the ass.

But with the Mogal you can also connect it to your laptop and use it as a modem.  Then it's not so bad.

How much is it to get an unlimited internet plan for a Sprint phone?

My phone just got crushed in my recliner, and busted the screen all up.

It depends on your plan.  But most of them you can get it for just an extra $15 a month.

    Lipps-

I went to the mall today, and messed around with the phones there. I seemed to like the Palm's the most. Just wondering if you have any Pros/ Cons of these phones, or know anyone who have had problems with them.

I guess I'm looking for a phone that has a full browser, so I can use the internet to place wagers online while I'm working. Let me know what you think.

I have the Palm 700WX and it works fine for me when it comes to betting online, mine is with Verizon though.  Used to be with Sprints but the signal is not as strong as Verizon where I'm moving to so switched to Verizon

    Thanks Rich.

I did like the 700. I was even thinking of the 650, simply because of the lower cost.

    OK, here's another question.

The Palm OS vs. Windows..... Which is better?

I heard that the Windows OS drains the battery much faster, but is it worth it?

    Hoops,

I used Palm OS with the 650 several years back and did not like it.  IMO, Windows is much better and it allows you to bet online.  I don't think the OS version allows you to do that, at least not that I can remember.

Better late than never. I do have a 700p, with the Palm OS, arriving in the mail on Monday, or Tuesday. I spent probably close to an hour and a half over a few days in the Sprint store, playing with both the Windows and Palm OS'.

Personally, I thought the Palm OS was easier to use, and the internet did seem to run faster on which ever browser that was on it, than it did on IE,

I'll have to tinker around with it, and make sure I like it. If not, I'll just sell the bitch, and get something else. I did get 1 hell of a deal on it, $260 for a week old phone, with a ton of accessories and a brand new extra battery.

    But thanks for your thoughts.

Just a little bump to tell anyone that is interested, about the Opera Mini 4 browser.

It is an awesome browser for any of the smart phones, as far as browsing and using the Covers Forums. It's pretty damn fast, and pretty easy to navigate on. Web pages look almost identical to what they do on my notebook, just on 1/20th of the screen.
