I just got asamsung 40" LCD and it rocks, after reaserching all over the place I found out that samsung makes the pannels for sony as well.
I compared both sharp and samsung and to my eyes samsung was better.
Let your eyes be the judge and you can't go wrong. Just make sure it has the conectivity that will allow you to have the best options as far as audio and interfacing.

Checked out the Samsung, it is a better picture, but I'm not willing to pay the extra money. It's @ 500 more than I can get the Aquos at - the difference isn't worthy of the price IMO. Trying to stay at $2000 since I expect the technology to keep improving & the prices to keep dropping, plus I'm going to have to upgrade my Directv equipment as well. Not happy about swapping the Tivo/Directv out for their HD-DVR, but I guess I'll either adjust or go to a media center pc. Thanks for the feedback, I'll post after I get everything bought & hooked up.

Is the Sharp Aquos the best bang for your buck 1080p on the market? I'm debating between buying a more quality 720p/1080i vs. a bottom end 1080p such as the Aquos or even the Westinghouse. My next purchase after the TV is a PS3 (possibly the 360) and I really want the 1080p. My budget is in the $2000-$2500 (CAD) range. Any recomendations?

I've been researching for 6 months and this is the best I've seen in this price range. I am ordering online next week - can grab it for $1900-$1950 online at many different places. Still researching which place to use. I'm actually going to Best Buy Sunday armed with the price from a few online retailers to see what price I can get from them, can't hurt to try. I like the upside of being at 1080p for PS3 or 360 purposes and future programming plus the picture is awesome - check it out in person, I don't think you'll disagree. I'll keep you posted with any updates.

You know man the more I research the more I'm learning that 1080p isn't as significant as many other factors. Especially in smaller tv's (< 50"). I've read a couple articles and from what I get the most important factors in order are:
1. Contrast Ratio
2. Colour Saturation
3. Colour Accuracy
4. Resolution
I'm now leaning towards Plasma, possibly the Panasonic. Me and my girl live in a pretty small Condo right now. I figure I'll go 42-46 now and then go for the 50+ 1080p after we buy a house and I get my own basement.

Plasmas aren't like they used to be. Most have a life expectancy of 60,000 hours. Even if you halve that to 30,000 you can watch your TV 8 hours a day for 10 years.

I'm still concerned with burn in when it comes to plasma. Even though I know things have been done to reduce the possibility, I can't see spending 2 grand only to burn an annoying image into my screen.

I'm back and forth on this .... reading a lot of positive things about the picture of the sharp aquos but a ton of negative feedback in regards to a banding issue with them.

I've read that the banding problem was corrected after the early production. I've seen this tv in the store and didn't notice any banding, but I am going to Best Buy tomorrow to look again and make my final decision.

The Aquos is the winner. Unless you have the money for the Samsung - the picture on that is incredible.
I gave a second look at plasmas, but the glare from a glass screen is an issue with me for where I'm hanging the TV.
The Sharp actually looks better from a distance, nothing lost at an angle, and the picture is superior to all the LCD's in this price range except for the Samsung. However, I don't want to go over $2000 at this time, since I expect 5 years from now this Aquos gets moved to the basement and replaced with the latest & greatest. I noticed zero banding on the Aquos btw.

Decided to step up and get the Samsung. The picture is stunning, and found a great price at just under $2500. It also has PIP which the Aquos doesn't. Had to take advantage of the price drop, and I just had a kick-ass weekend in AC so I decided to cough up the extra cash. IMO I don't think you could go wrong with either TV. I'll post again after I have everything set up. I had to upgrade Directv, and the earliest install date I could get was 3/17, which sucks because the NCAA tourney starts. I guess I'll use an antenna until DTV gets hooked up.

I bought the 42" Panasonic Plasma with the Panasonic home theatre system. I got a really good deal. You're supposed to run the plasmas on a lower setting for the first 100 hours to let the phosphors warm up or whatever but I am completely satisfied with my purchase. Should be able to crank it up by the middle of this week.

GL with the TV LeafsNeedD. I think the Panasonic is the best selling plasma out there. Saw it when I was scouting my tv & it has a nice picture. I got the Samsung 46" LCD for $2300 + $150 shipping, no sales tax.
This set retailed for $4500 msrp 8 months ago, so I feel like I'm buying at the right time.
Looks like you'll be all set for the NCAA's - good luck.

Just hooked up my Samsung (LNS4695D 46 INCH 1080P LCD HDTV) - WOW!!!!!
Can't wait to see what this bad boy looks like with HD Directv. I have plain old rabbit ears hooked up right now, and I am blown away by how great this picture is. Even the diretcv standard picture with just an s-video hookup isn't bad. Highly recommend this tv.

OTA hd is as good as it gets. Less compression. DTV hd won't be as sharp but should still be nice.
