Italy have exceeded early predictions by winning their group and advancing to play a 2nd place team in the Round of 16. The reward must seem bitter sweet as Spain are the opponents today. I have to give full credit to Conti for acknowledging that his team is in transition and a great player like Pirlo is no longer available. He is the primary reason for the upset of Belgium in the opening game of the group stage. Yes they sat back and played their usual stellar defence, but countered Belgium by spreading the field and utilizing their speed on the flanks. Although Belgium dominated the play and possession, they were unable to find a finishing touch in the final 3rd. Against Sweden, Italy played a similar style that saw them sitting back and slowing the game down to a snails pace. Eventually, they found a late counter attack goal to steal the 3 points. Since they had already wrapped up the top spot in group, the game against Ireland afforded them the luxury of resting players.
Today they will have to step up their game as Spain will certainly own the possession game with a far superior midfield, which is compounded by the loss of Candreva for Italy. And the midfield is where the game will be decided today. Can Italy chase and defend for a full 90 minutes ? Maybe, but i will gladly take the plus money being offered and back the better team to eventually wear down a very game Italian defence. Alvaro Morata to score anytime @ 3.50 looks tempting as well.
Adding:
Spain Half / Full @ 3.80 ( 2 units )
Cheers
Leaning to England " in game " as the price doesnt excite me. It is that time where " The Cream Rises " and Cinderella is left looking more like the ugly duckling. Yesterday was a prime example of that with Germany and Belgium. England should eventually break down that stubborn defensive wall of Iceland.
