    Knights snare Kade Snowden

    BRETT KEEBLE

FORMER Knights prop Kade Snowden is leaving Cronulla to come home to Newcastle.

The 24-year-old front-rower, who made his Australian Test debut against New Zealand on the Gold Coast last Friday, has agreed to terms with the Knights on a long-term contract and the deal will be formally announced at a media conference later today.

‘‘I am really excited to be returning home to Newcastle at a time when the club is going through such an amazing transformation,’’ Snowden said in a statement.

‘‘You can really feel the excitement that the Tinkler Group has brought to the Hunter region and Newcastle Knights fans. I feel honoured to be part of these exciting times.’’

‘‘I have been fortunate to play under some great coaches in my short career and I am now keen to learn from one of the greatest in Wayne Bennett.’’

‘‘While excited about the future, I would like to say thank you to Cronulla which has been my home since 2008 where I have made some great friends and have fond memories.’’

‘‘I wish to assure all Sharks fans that I will be giving nothing but my best for the balance of the season. I would also like to thank [coach] Shane Flanagan and [football general manager] Darren Mooney for their personal support throughout these negotiations.’’

It has been reported in the past three days that the Belmont North Sharks junior was poised to turn his back on a more lucrative offer from Cronulla to sign a new four-year deal with the Knights but the exact length of the contract will be revealed at the official announcement this afternoon.

One of several home-grown juniors allowed to leave the Knights at the end of 2007, Snowden has realised his potential at Cronulla and developed into a NSW and Australian representative.

Snowden was on the verge of re-signing with Cronulla in February but pulled out at the last minute after a phone call from billionaire racing and mining magnate Nathan Tinkler, who was in the process of negotiating with Knights management to take ownership of the NRL club.

Tinkler has since taken the reins at the Knights and was determined to lure Snowden back to Newcastle despite Cronulla increasing their offer to keep the bullocking forward at the Sharks.

no I don't. And I have seen nothing to suggest otherwise.

He is not in the top 6 props in the game, and he is reportedly getting paid like he is in the top 2. He is getting hannat money for Mannah talent

He has played rep footy due to a lack of options.

who are your top six? relative to the snowden deal?

    can't be petero, cause he's 40.

Matt Scott is better than Snowden, but he's 26 / 27 and would have cost the same if not more.

    Who else?

Snowden not a better buy than Poore?

    Fuck me dead

its not about upside, it means the knights are paying for potential. Much like Manly did for Tony Williams. Mark Phillipousis had potential. Look where that Fifita for the Tigers will be in 12 months. He is Snowden minus 18 months

In no particular order - Ben Hannant, Matthew Scott, Michael Weyman, Dave Shillington, Sam Rapira (yes, I said Sam Rapira), Aidan Tolman. Tolman is 22. If Lang actually played Burgess where Burgess wants to play he'll be on the list. But Lang is trying to turn him into a ball playing back rower.

Luke Douglas makes more hit-ups per game, more metres and more tackles per game (and less missed tackles).

It's top dollar for what a guy might do, not for what he is doing. His career mirrors where Justin Poores was 2 years ago, but Poore actually had finals experience.

snowden is one level above Keith Galloway.

If NSW actually had depth in the front row like Qld, do you think snowden would be on the $ he will be getting. It'll be like paying top dollar for Learoyd-Lars

and you are looking at Snowden through red and blue glasses. I wouldn't be happy if Manly paid this money for him.

When the salary cap gets raised to 900 billion in 2013 the current Chris Sandow deal will look like a fucking bargain

you don't think the deal has been done with mindful knowledge of the TV deal?

michael weyman and david shillington have played like overpaid busteds all year. Yes weyman has been injured, but you still have to pay for the box, aka mad dog.

Who else should Newcastle have gone after?

Time will tell.......he is the England captain and might take it to another level when he comes here...u just dont know...

It is all a gamble....Look at the NBA for example....top picks go bust all the time when going to another level while others that either get undrafted or are very late picks become superstars...U just dont know till they try

and the 'if he didn't get picked for nsw' line doesn't work either.

most of the qld pack, save for cam smith and at times, matt scott, has been going no better than the nsw guys.
