It was a wayward statement that should have been more careful constructed given the location of its posting.  Let me say firstly, that the Knights are my most favoured NSW team, 1988 was a great year and introduced the NRL’s two finest clubs imo.

However, my concern for in 2009 is one that existed for the Knights in 05’ and ’07, that being injuries.  The depth of the Knights could well be one of the strongest in the NRL, but this is the league where winning it all requires a great deal of luck on the injury front to go all the way.  The Knights won comprehensively last Saturday with $1mill on the sideline, unfortunately a sizeable portion of that money will remain there for most of the season – Cross and Ciraldo.  It would be great to replace Cross with Royal and White, but nobody could forecast what was going to happen to Cross.  There is present depth to somewhat replace Cross in Tolar, Wicks (unproven), Taufua (backrower), Fa'aoso & Natusch (too green), but it is a large loss.

Sau appears to be a ticking time-bomb, likely to play out the rest of the season with the aid of painkillers thanks to his sternum.  But obviously the largest concern must be Mullen.

To go all the way this year the Knights must have the Mullen / Dureau combination at their disposal imo.  Mullen could replicate Benji’s performance in ‘05 (sorry for the comparison – Benji is overpaid, perhaps Hilder is the better example), when he played out the Tigers winning season with a questionable shoulder.  Or, he could miss games if that shoulder can’t see out the season (including rep exposure).  I hope he does; the Knights must surely rate as one of the most attractive teams to watch this year.

It’s far too early in the season to be thinking Grand Final, but I had to elaborate upon my earlier comment.

I know some of you guys don’t like these reports, but if there is any truth to the $45k some bloke has on the Knights at $23 to win it all ($990,000), fark I wish I was him even if only for the hedging opportunity come finals time.  Tinkler, you’re a lucky man, we know it’s you…

And AB, you are killing it this season

I may have went off half-cocked (hard to believe, I know ) at the any depth comment. However, apart from Cross and Ciraldo, they were also without Tolar, Naiquama, Patterson, Vuna and Rogers.

Injuries in the past have always been Newcastle's archillies heel, especially in years prior when we had a massively skewed cap. We are far better equipped this season, although I agree that if Mullen or, perhaps even to a greater degree Gidley go down long-term, it would be almost curtains for them.

Unfortunately, that is the nature of the beast with the cap. Clubs have to gamble on the fitness of players. I agree 100% that luck plays a massive role in any teams quest for the title. Every team is in the same boat.

Take Lockyer out of Brisbane, Ennis out of the Dogs, Farah or Marshall out of the Tigers, Stewart out of Manly etc etc. Even though Gold Coast won 2 games without Prince this year, they did it with a point to prove and no way could they continue to compete week in, week out if he was gone.

I think this year's comp, more than any other I can remember, is completely up for grabs. There is no standout side that is leaps and bounds above any other. If Newcastle can avoid anymore long-term injuries, I'm confident they will be there when the whips are cracking. The same can definately be said for Brisbane.

Newcastle have always had extra motivation to Broncos games. Since they both came into the comp together, the Knights have always gone into them as a mini State of Origin. I read with interest the other day that Tony Butterfield was talking to Wayne Bennet and telling him of the massive emphasis Newcastle put on Brisbane games. To his surprise, Bennet said that the Broncos felt the same way.

Hey speaking of fruity, I was just handed some interesting footage of what Braith Anasta gets up to around the Bondi junction when he's not training or playing :

I bet Braith and Eryn have two powder rooms at their place.

Best part about that link, was that it had a link to Counting with Bruce Springstein, which I think you may have showed me before.

    Newcastle ml @ $1.65 (5)
    Newcastle (-3.5) @ $1.91 (5)

    Brisbane ml @ $1.52 (5)
    Brisbane (-6) @ $1.95 (5)

    Melbourne ml @ $1.67 (5)
    Melbourne (-4.5) @ $2.00 (5)

If there are major injury blows to any of the teams I'm on, I may buy out of some of it, albeit at a much worse price. I'll take my chances on the lines as they sit.

Minor back surgery. I say minor because it wasn't spinal, but I'm still crippled as hell. Can't bend, can hardly sit, can't sleep on my back. I can walk about as fast as Shane Tronc.

Not even. The wound from an old op never really healed properly. Anyway, somewhere along the way, something has gotten into the wound and, over time the wound closed. Unbeknown for ages, an abcess formed under the skin. When it reached the spine area it had nowhere to go, so it took the path of least resistance towards the skin.

Painful. Now I have a 4cm deep hole in my back.

I have to have another op in 2 months to get the rest of the tissue removed.
