Cleveland and Detroit are both excellent defensive teams and Atlanta had a great home record this season. Don't forget that when the Lakers were 13-1 from Feb 1-28, that one loss was at Atlanta. You can dismiss those stats as much as you want. The Lakers do play good defense. They play with intensity and they have length and athleticism, but they don't bring the grit and physicality of Cleveland, Detroit or Boston. Utah had OFFENSIVE physicallity, but no one accused Utah of being a good defensive team this year.
Oh, and what was the Lakers record against Boston, Detroit, and Cleveland this year??? 1-5 SU. They played good defense in all but one of these games, but they still lost almost every single time.
Just want to add you should temper your argument with the fact that all of those 6 games happened before the trade for Pau Gasol.
This Laker team was finding it's stride at that point in the season. They went through alot of trial and error after Andrew Bynum went down, and experimented with a few different starting line-ups before Pau came along.
Agreed also as far as the first part of your quote Bukowski, although it should be mentioned that the game at Atlanta was Gasol's first game as a Laker. When they played them 2 weeks later in LA, the Lakers won 122-93.
Also agreed that Boston is, by far, the more physical team, and that the Eastern conference is still the black and blue conference, and that's certainly one of the keys to think about in this series. Will Boston be able to impose it's will physically (which Phil Jackson knows they want to do) and how does LA counter?
Also, what's Boston's strategy against Kobe? The Spurs actually chose simply not to foul him and give up the extra free-throw shots. They lived with his taking outside shots.
You know, again, the argument is about contrasting styles, and we'll see how that plays out.
Alot of people like to argue that defense wins championships, and I'll agree with that in general, but I don't think you can blanket the argument and guarantee the Celtics take the series because the Lakers score a hell of alot of points and one of the reasons they closed that San Antonio series out early was because they racheted it up on the defensive end.
Now if the Celts find the offensive flow they had mid-season form then were definatly talking about seeing a series that's extremely competitive.
Also, the Lakers have gotten away from
running the triangle a little bit late in the playoffs and they'll definatly
need to get back to that if they want to beat an incredible defensive
team like Boston.
I still like edge the Lakers have in this series as a whole ultimately because of experience factor. I think it's a big deal in the finals. This entire stage is brand new to Doc Rivers and all of the Big 3.
It's also hard to ignore the fact that this is Kobe's MVP season, and he's been able to single-handedly will them to win a couple of games in these playoffs. Add to it that the Lakers have a lot of other offensive weapons besides, and a very gritty bench that Phil Jackson has spent alot of time developing out of necessity over the past 3 season. And they're starting to play really great defense as well.

I suppose that's what I get for looking for any kind of relevant game analysis from a maniacal doll . . .
Agreed, by the way GoG, that Boston's run against those teams should be taken within the context of that division's style of play.
My point was that the Lakers seemed to have an easier time taking care of business while winning several big games on the road against teams with much better records collectively than you'll find in the East.

fair enough tiger... but this is something i have been harping on...
how many of those games that Boston lost on the road in the Cleveland and Atlanta series were must win games?
this is a team that tends to play to the level of their competition and to their own desparation level... but the flip side of that is that they have stepped up bigtime every time the urgency was there...
one thing i have learned in betting... bet against any over-reaction... Boston was the best team in the regular season... won their season series with every team they played... came into the playoffs as the favorite to win it all... but because they didn't sweep their opponents they are suddenly a 2:1 underdog as a home favorite? suddenly they are going to get swept out of the finals?
this team has done nothing but win every time they needed to...

the Lakers played their best basketball this year from Dec. 20 to Jan. 4... they went 11-1 during the stretch... the avg margin of victory in the 11 wins was over 12 pts per game...
the only loss came at home against Boston by 19 pts... it was the 3rd of 5 straight home games for the Lakers... it was the 4th of 4 road games in 5 days by Boston...
the Lakers did not have Gasol at the time, but they did have Bynum... the Celtics completely dominated the game... it was over by the start of the 4th quarter... Odom was held without a FG by Garnett... Pierce, KG and Perkins all scored 20+ pts...
this was smack in the middle of the Lakers playing their best ball of the season...
keep disregarding those regular season matchups people...

Coverdatspread - No doubt, nothing worse than the rabid fan that finds these forums and thinks it's a place to root his team on. NOTHING was worse than that Ohio State Buckeyes fan who put a million posts on the thread before the CFB Mythical Natl Championship game. I wish I could've watched the game with that idiot just to watch him suffer!
Thats always been the problem with these forums....its a great place for info but you have to weed through the posts from people who are posting with their hearts instead of their heads. Anyone who calls out another poster because of an opinion and calls them an idiot is out of their minds. I wish this site had an ignore button where you can ignore the posts of a poster from thread to thread. It would make things much easier.

Seems the vast majority of this thread is on the Lakers. I'll have to go with the Celtics. Going on a bit of limb and say that Ray Allen will be the difference maker in this series (most people will laugh now). He showed signs of life near the end of the Detroit series, and I'll say that he'll be back in full-force for this series, his feud will Kobe will really get him going.
I think there is good value in the series spread.
Boston +1.5 games -104
Boston +2.5 games -236
I don't think Boston will lose in less than 7 games, if losing the series at all.
Game 1, Boston -2.5, they absolutely not afford to fall behind after the first game and they know it. This team has been clutch when they really needed to be.

Attitude is not something that you can turn on and turn off. If the Celts think that they can wait till "must win" situations to really play then they have no chance in the finals. This is the series that that attitude and the lack of a good coach catches up to them.

I would consider a 12-3 playoff record to be a much better stretch than an 11-1 regular season run. Also I do believe that when the Celtics made their famed west coast run and beat everyone up that they were playing the best basketball of the season. The Lakers are the hot team right now and the Celtics have already played their best ball this season.

REALLY? Because in the first 2 games in Boston, a guy named Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 41 points, shot 60% and had 17 rebounds before they started double-teaming him...
YEAH REALLY. haha... As much as I love big Z, he's just an oversized jumpshooter/putback guy who's game is based on touch and finesse, not post power and strength. I'm saying they are in serious need of some muscle downlow, and that's their most glaring weakness, especially as long as they refuse to post lebron for whatever the hell reason.
and honestly, utah plays some tough physical defense, believe it or not. They foul hard to prevent easy shots, and AK, while a flop artist bitch, is a very legitimate defender... but enough of other teams...
angry tiger, you hit it on the head. a huge part of the reason kobe won MVP is that this team has juggled around starting 5's all year. It wasn't until they got pau, and once vlad rad was back and healthy that the team established a consistent identity and began elivating their game to the top of the west.
as for the comment on boston not winning games that weren't "MUST WIN" games, that's not a good thing AT ALL. needing the "must win" moniker attached to win on the road is the staple of a team without mental toughness that is proned to get burned.... Were games 3 and 4 of round 1 "must win" for the lakers?, how about game 6 of round 2 (or even the close game 4), what about games 4 and 5 against the spurs? no way... but they have the mental toughness to compete in just because games and close the series early. All I'm saying is that boston had better win these first two or they could be in a lot of trouble....
and tonk time? you know nothing about hoops either, you're just a lame boston homer who wants to talk all the trash in the world while you have the chance... and by all means, get it out of your system while you can, cuz the lakers are coming for your boys.

YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HOOPS!!! YOU MUST LIKE GOLF OR SOMETHING!!! YOU WILL GET LAUGHED AT TOO LOSER!!! NOW THATS HILARIOUS!!!!!
That's really funny considering we are both picking the Celtics to win this series. However, I'm taking them based on analysis and you are taking them because you are a homer. It's fine to be a homer, just don't bring your idiot rants onto the thread. Idiot.

I didnt make this up, but thought it might help you guys out. By the numbers, I see it like this...The celts need to win the first 2 games at home to be able to lose away 3 times. IF that were to happen, which I dont believe it will the celts will win the Championship. The Celtics, byt eh numbers will NOT lose the Championship at home in game 6 or 7.Lakers backers need to be up 3 games to 1 going into the 5th game to win series. That can only happen if lakers win in Boston game 1 or 2. If they dont celts win, even with a 3 game sweep in LA.

Dudes like tonktime make me think of my favorite of all Bukowski quotes: "It's time for invasion by the space aliens, and they can damn well have it all!"
Want to reiterate a point that the Wang-man brought up that I failed to mention but did think about, in terms of some of the games the Lakers won in "non-desperation" situations. It does show signs of maturity. Especially for a young team. This team grew up alot this year. Faster than expected. Jeanie Buss said on the radio that this particular team runs the triangle better than any of Phil Jackson's Laker teams thus far.
As for that regular season loss to Boston: yes, Boston did whup that ass. Without Gasol, as you mentioned.
But the Spurs beat the Lakers by 19 during their series.
Everybody gets their ass whupped from time to time.
Anybody else get a look at those Old School / New School props. that Sportsbook has up? Hilarious.
You're betting individual player stats from the 1984 series against players in the year's series.
Like Avg Points per game: Kobe vs. Kareem, or Kobe vs. Larry. You can even bet Kurt Rambis vs. Luke Walton.
Magic's assists per game vs. Kobe's rebounds + assists . . . goes to show you what a bas-ass distributor one Ervin Johnson was.
There's Larry Birds 21 freakin' rebounds in game 4 vs. any one game for Kevin Garnett.
Or Garnett vs. the Cheif for the series, who averaged 11.4 rebounds a game.
There's a bunch more . . . .

Bukowski . . . you're killin' me.
Hilarious.

I would consider a 12-3 playoff record to be a much better stretch than an 11-1 regular season run. Also I do believe that when the Celtics made their famed west coast run and beat everyone up that they were playing the best basketball of the season. The Lakers are the hot team right now and the Celtics have already played their best ball this season.
ah, i think i see where you're going with this...
basically, you are determined to bet the Lakers no matter what statistics can be presented to argue against it...
but explain this to me... my example was a way of comparing the two teams on an even playing field (actually, this particular playing field is sloped to favor the Lakers heavily... and yet still points to Boston)... so how does it do any good to look at the Lakers 12-3 record against teams that Boston hasn't played a single game against in the playoffs?
clearly, i used this example because the two teams played in the regular season... and the best REGULAR SEASON basketball was played by the Lakers during a stretch that saw them get their ass kicked by the Celtics...
if you want to say that's completely irrelevant, that's your business...
but it's not!

line movement and all considered... vegas agrees... let's get that money... maker..
wang i read your posts and follow you alot there r a couple of you guys i really like to follow, this is going to be a good matchup and if you like the lakers go with em, i am not making a play until i read how both teams play each other, but when was the last time the home team got points? i think it was lakers vs utah game 4 their 2nd away game in that series and they were giving one and lost by 5 or 6 in ot.

Just hope this sh*t is as good as they're building it up to be. Seems ESPN is continuously showing the old school games between these two. Hope it is no sweep as some people seem to think. If it goes 7, that is three extra games to play on! Coming off of the prolonged rest for both teams feeling the under in game 1, especially for the 1st quarter. Under(192) 1st Qtr. under(48.5)
