Brother Steven, writing on Powerline, in a post entitled "The GOP's Fiscal Reykjavik":
Most folks who recall the 1980s—or who have read chapter 10 of my book—will
know that the climactic moment of Reagan’s Soviet diplomacy was the
Reykjavik summit in October 1986, when Gorbachev offered huge
concessions to the United States on nuclear weaponry, culminating in the
central agreement to abolish all strategic nuclear weapons in 10
years. But there was a catch: Reagan had to give up development of
missile defense. Reagan said “Nyet,” and the summit collapsed, amidst
gloom and doom and near universal condemnation of Reagan for stubbornly
refusing to yield on his silly missile defense idea.
Before long,
however, it became clear that Reagan’s “stubbornness” (the history books
will—already are—understand it as “statesmanship” rather than
stubbornness) was the key to getting the Soviet Union essentially to
capitulate on nearly all of Reagan’s terms, and fairly quickly, too.
The
budget talks in search of a “grand deal” that apparently under way this
weekend look like the fiscal equivalent of Reykjavik: Obama may well
offer substantial reform of entitlements a decade down the road, in
return for a GOP concession on taxes today.
And, of course, Speaker Boehner should do just what
President Reagan did: state simply, "This meeting is over," get up, and
walk out.
What would Brothers David Brooks and Michael Murphy have to say to that?

the above was a cut and paste of course since its written in correct english. i dig the analogy though the argument that raising the debt ceiling even in candy glossed spending cut terms is a no brainer just seems un true to me. entitlement cuts 5-10 years down the line will be fixed somehow and probably not happen. how many Tril is enough Tril?

HR3400 was only an act that amended the current tax code to allow a tax credit for insurance in high risk pools.
It was never an alternative to ObamaCare,
do you have any idea what HR 3400 was?
heres the actual bill To provide for incentives to encourage health insurance coverage"
lets look at part of the table of contents
Sec. 101. Refundable tax credit for health insurance costs of low-income individuals. Sec. 102. Advance payment of credit as premium payment for qualified health insurance. Sec. 103. Election of tax credit instead of alternative government or group plan benefits. Sec. 104. Deduction for qualified health insurance costs of individuals. Sec. 105. Limitation on abortion funding. Sec. 106. Non-discrimination on abortion and respect for rights of conscience. Sec. 107. Equal employer contribution rule to promote choice. Sec. 108. Limitations on State restrictions on employer auto-enrollment. Sec. 109. Credit for small employers adopting auto-enrollment and defined contribution options. Sec. 110. Require employers to disclose amounts paid for employer-provided health plan coverage. Sec. 111. HSA modifications and clarifications.
sure sounds a lot like obamacare to me.
if you could be as so kind as to explain to me what exactly makes you think this bill wasnt an alternative to obamacare?

They voted for 2 UNFUNDED wars and an UNFUNDED prescription drug plan for seniors with no negotiations on price for drugs allowed! Irresponsible assholes! AND the GOP voted for and passed a tax credit for businesses sending American jobs overseas!! They paid American Corps to fuck over the US workers! GOP MANTRA: PARTY AND PROFITS OVER COUNTRY!

14daroad! Cutting out tax loopholes is not raising taxes! Since low tax rates for the rich DO NOT produce jobs..look at the Bush years for certified proof..how does ending the Bush tax cuts for the nations richest 2% hurt anyone but the few who have made out like bandits-Robin Hood in reverse- over the past 10 years??? And,since Social security is TOTALLY funded by the payroll taxes collected..why is it a part of any valid debt reduction discussion?? BTW...Social Security today has a 2 TRILLION DOLLAR SURPLUS!! So fuck off with your "taxes" bullshit!

Until the government reforms the tax code; drastically reduces government's size and its role (read, intrusion) into the private sector; slashes regulations to allow free markets to function and generally cease and desist from treating - and using - five percent of the American people as the personal ATM of the other 95 percent, that five percent should publicly pledge not to invest a single penny in the people who vote to seize their wealth from them.
That's why business are sitting record amounts of cash and not investing it or hiring.
If unions can go on strike to get what they want, why not the capitalists?

You see, Socialism is okay when Bush/GOP is buying votes. Actually, it is unfair to compare Socialism to the corruption and devastation that was Medicare part D. Socialism is to the benefit of all the people or at least aimed at the greater good.
Of course Bush would write a blank check to the Pharm companies and charge it on the credit card along with the Iraq war. THE TREASURY HAS BEEN ROBBED

low tax rates for the rich DO NOT produce jobs..look at the Bush years for certified proof
Really?
Perhaps you could then explain why unemployment was at 4.6% when Harry & Nancy took over?
Perhaps you could explain this?
Tax revenues are climbing twice as fast as the administration
predicted in February, so fast that the budget deficit could actually
decline this year.
The main reason is a big spike in corporate tax receipts, which have
nearly tripled since 2003, as well as what appears to be a big increase
in individual taxes on stock market profits and executive bonuses.
I won't hold my breath though....

how does ending the Bush tax cuts for the nations richest 2%
Um, the Bush tax cuts removed millions of people from federal income tax liability.
Given that the tax code is more progressive since the Bush tax cuts were enacted, you really, really should stop pretending that the only affected the "top 2%"
And,since Social security is TOTALLY funded by the payroll taxes collected.
BTW...Social Security today has a 2 TRILLION DOLLAR SURPLUS!!
That is a silly, hysterical lie.
Did you wake up today and say to yourself, "I can't wait to beclown myself on the Internet" or what?

it would appear that this mother of no brainers gets closer and closer to real spending cuts as boehner tows the party line. obama desperately is positioning himself as a centrist and while this overt lie is believed by the msm, those negotiating with him know he is lying.

can you please explain why 1) you think 200k-250k is rich and 2) you realize a large percentage (upwards of 50%) of small business owners (which surely you realize is the true driver of the economy) fall into this category
can we stop with this 2% nonsense and have a hurdle that is actually rich? why not 500k why not 1m? could it be that actually taxing only the truly rich doesnt raise as much taxes as people want?

Um, ok Steve. I did not see your response (which was several days after mine..notice I didn't make any accusations of you "avoiding" a response).
Your republicans bill did exactly what I said...it was an act to provide tax credits for insurance coverage for high risk pools. The only thing I did not add was the act's limitation on abortion coverage through health insurance (I assume your fake libertarian views still support choice). The last 5 sections solely dealt with employer contributions.
Even Tom Colburn-R, said this act accomplished nothing (he supported HR 2520 instead, co-sponsored with Paul Ryan). Hell, I would have supported that act instead of HR 3400.
When bills are introduced that address the problem with those that cannot afford insurance at all on a month to month basis, rather than recieving a tax credit at the end of the year, I will pay attention. If a family cannot make ends meet, giving a tax credit really doesn't help.

wait a minute,
first you said republicans didnt offer any solutions to the health care issue.
then you say that there were 2 bills offered by republicans to deal with health care (and isnt the real issue how to cover the uninsured???) and that you would even support one of those bills?
and upon a quick google search, turns out there was yet another republican sponsored health care bill, HR 3438.
im no rocket scientist but when someone makes a claim then proves their own claim incorrect in their next post, that doesnt make them the sharpest tool in the shed.
and whats with this steve nonsense? ill even do the unamerican thing and prove my innocence instead of the american thing, which would be you proving my guilt. you just tell me what you want me to do. the only caveat being when i prove you wrong (but at least you wont be able to prove yourself wrong this time), i want you to box yourself.
