    WASHINGTON

Fist fights at campaign rallies. A major presidential candidate called a bigot and bully by members of his own party. Gridlock in Washington. And Americans downright pessimistic.

This is America’s politics today, seven years after Barack Obama was elected president with a promise to change it all.

The political change he predicted never appeared. Instead, partisanship and dysfunction have grown worse. His legacy on policies is more mixed. He did accomplish things, notably the Affordable Care Act. But his legacy on politics is another story.

Republicans and Democrats refuse to compromise, sometimes even talk. Congress has become more unproductive with lawmakers failing to pass budgets or even consider presidential appointments. And most Americans have little to no confidence in the federal government to tackle the problems facing the nation in 2016, according to a poll released in January.

Just Thursday, about 20 people were arrested after hundreds of protesters blocked an intersection and vandalized a police car outside a rally for Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump at the Orange County Fairgrounds in California. Several fights broke out.

“It’s fair to say that President Obama entered office as chief executive of a divided country, and he’s done nothing noticeable to heal those divisions in his seven years,” said William Galston, a former adviser to President Bill Clinton and now a senior fellow at the center-left Brookings Institution.

Barring an unexpected change in the country, the political legacy of the 44th president will be that he left office with the atmosphere in the United States in worse shape than when he was elected.

That failure is all the more disappointing, Democrats and Republicans say, because he raised expectations so high.

“He clearly thought – and he was entirely wrong – that he could transform politics in America,” said George Edwards, a presidential scholar at Texas A&M University. “It was naive to think he could bridge this divide.”

Before he was even sworn into office, Obama proclaimed that his successful election itself had altered American politics. “Change has come to America,” he said the day he was elected president.

Now entering his final months in office, Obama acknowledges that he was not able to “fix our politics.”

“It’s one of the few regrets of my presidency? – ?that the rancor and suspicion between the parties has gotten worse instead of better,” Obama said in his final State of the Union address in January. “There’s no doubt a president with the gifts of Lincoln or Roosevelt might have better bridged the divide, and I guarantee I’ll keep trying to be better so long as I hold this office."

There’s plenty of reasons for the dysfunction: millions of dollars of unaccountable money in politics; districts that ensure most lawmakers don’t face competition; parties that have become more extreme; highly partisan media outlets and an atmosphere that no longer stops campaigning for governing.

In February, Obama devoted an entire speech to partisan politics, pushing for Americans to reduce money in politics, change how congressional districts are drawn and make voting easier.

But Obama, too, shares in the blame.

American political system is designed to produce political gridlock. But this weakness is also a strength because division of powers minimize bad laws.

Premature to judge Obama's legacy because future historians have the best perspective after long term impacts are known.  Currently, most historians regard Obama as an average President.

Under Obama, there has been many changes.  More Americans have healthcare insurance.  Higher school academic standards. Improved pay equity for women. Start of decline in prison population. Moves to curb global warming. Legalized same sex marriage. Stronger economy. Rescue of auto industry. Unemployment lowered to 5%. Deficit reduced to under 3% of GDP. Fairer tax reforms. Less credit card abuses.Revolution in energy industry. Execution of Bin Laden. Normalization of relations with Cuba. Isolation of Putin. Withdraw of U.S. troops from Iraq.  Improved U.S. standing in the world.

I can agree with Obama's decree to get rid of the monopoly on cable boxes was genius....outside of that what has he done exactly to usher in change in trends?

Did he come out with an executive order to mandate higher acedemics? Doesn't that take the legislative branch to facilitate?

Was their a similar executive order that mandates that you can't discriminate wages based on gender? Or is that already illegal?

Climate change? Ok so he led the change to force automakers to produce more fuel efficient vehicles, but to you really think the GOP faught that kicking and screaming?

Healthcare? Every week I read another story about significant raises in Healthcare premiums, Companies dropping out of the health care market, or way fewer people signed up for the ponzi scheme to work properly and many companies are having a hard time turning a profit...except the big pharma which mysteriously is turning out to be the BIG WINNER in all of Obamacare.

Unemployment? A huge number of people have quit looking for work...but thanks to the republicans for putting limits on the handouts that gives people incentives to start looking for jobs again when they run out...if it was up to Nancy and Harry still there would be people getting unlimited handouts.

I'll stop there but even Obama said the other day that he regrets that he can't take a victory lap on the economy.

How is the jv team doing these days?
How is the taliban doing these days?
How are race relations these days?
How do you think Obama feels now about making fun of Romney when he predicted Putin would be the next geopolitical threat in the debate?

Seems to me we have same heads buried in the sand and when I say 'we' I really mean YOU!

Unlike dullard36, I really do welcome points to the counter. I won't run and hide from direct questions like he does.

Under Obama the start of decline in prison population...and you know why ?

Because,,he commuted the prison sentences of federal drug offenders.. released over a 100 Guantanamo Bay terrorist prisoners with ties to Al Qaeda.

In 2014 Obama released 19,732 criminal illegal aliens back onto U.S. streets who have been convicted of 64,197 crimes — rapist, kidnappers .. including 208 murderers...and a total of 36,000 since 2009....and you are giving Obama credit for reducing the prison population by putting these illegal aliens criminals back onto U.S. streets ..?

All I have to say is if that's part of Obama 's legacy you are praising ..well that's very Liberal of you ..

    Links aren't facts

Back up your earlier statements with actual facts stated in a clear and concise manner and I will say I incorrectly predicted your Failiure.
So far it seems like I'm right on point and your obsession with me will outweigh the actual and clearly stated facts to back up your argument.

I mean this is already on the level of needing "back up" as you flounder

All I have to say is if that's part of Obama 's legacy you are praising ..well that's very Liberal of you ..

OpEd: 300,000 felons immigrated during Bush's tenure On November 28, 2005, President Bush, speaking in Tucson, conceded that in 5 years 4.5 million aliens had been caught attempting to break into the US. Among the 4.5 million, Bush admitted, were "more than 350,000 with criminal records." One in every 12 illegal aliens the US Border Patrol had apprehended was a criminal.

That is 70,000 felons apprehended each year, 200 felons every single day for 5 years, trying to break into our country to rob, rape, and murder Americans. Of the millions who succeeded on Bush's watch, how many came for just such purposes? How many Americans have been robbed, assaulted, or murdered because the president failed in his duty to defend the borders of the US?

Nearly 8 million foreigners did enter during those 5 years, 3.7 million of them illegally. If 1 in 12 was a criminal, 300,000 felons slipped in during Bush's tenure. This is an historic dereliction of presidential duty.

Slim ,why didn't you squawk about this 8 years ago?

Catch up,,that's not the what I was talking to thirdperson about ..it was about him claiming. Under Obama, there has been many changes. one being . Start of decline in prison population ..And that would be a plus to Obama's legacy..it is not.

As far as Bush not stopping all illegal entering this country..he didn't and he also did not finish the Southern wall Congress gave him the moneys to do.. ..he's guilty ..but the discussion I am having with thirdperson was not a tit-for-tat it is about Obama 's legacy not GWBush's ..

So far it seems like I'm right on point and your obsession with me will outweigh the actual and clearly stated facts to back up your argument.

I mean this is already on the level of needing "back up" as you flounder

Would the distinguished, NPI, gentleman from the northeast care to explain why he didn't ask the liberal for facts yet pounced on the claims made by the distinguished gentleman on the right?

Thanks in advance for slowly pointing out to dullard36 that I've already met the requirements placed before me.

Then ask him why he, as the non-partisan independent, refuses to hold any standard at all for the liberal who made the same sort of claims.

...then would you care to ask the extinguished gentleman why he avoids my direct questions in the other thread that deal with the law.

Darkhorse ,no need to get testy ..and you are right he was correct in saying Obama has started a decline in the prison population ...and it's a fact he's doing it by by opening the prison doors letting felons out by executive action...felons that were convicted in a court of law before a jury of their peers..

No need to be so sensitive. It's not like your whole life and self worth depends upon an Internet forum does it? Lol

I'm wondering however like I stated earlier are there over factors to the decrease in prison population beyond Obama letting people out? To me spendaholics who want to burn through as much govt money and resource make longer sentences, spend spend spend on more prisons and jails and costs of the criminal justice system.  It's just not fiscally responsible but some people real believe in that type of spending of govt money and resources.  Perhaps you could comment on that?

I am asking in a civil manner not wanting to look like a baby throwing a tantrum because you didn't respond to my post on this thread or whine and cry about something that happened on another thread like an obsessed psychopath.

    That would be stupid
