Now a simple majority ends debate on Supreme Court nomination process .Gorauch will be confirmed Friday.
McConnell siccwds where Reid d Nev. Failed. He will make modifications on the length of debate effectively neutering any power the democrats have in the house and senate.

And it will work both ways. Senate will stop being an gridlock proned institution and become effective again passing legislation. When it is Democratic party turn to run the Senate
They will not face what happen to Ried.
Yes mattbrot this is a great thing.

Wow. I'm really surprised to see the opinions about this. The senate rules were designed so that decisions were to be made with bipartisan input, and not completely ruled by one party. Rules were put in place to prevent one person/party from overrunning everything. If you're a Republican, it seems really cool right now, but this is a very dangerous path to go down. Over the last 15 years, there have been a lot of pandora's boxes opened up, and there is no going back. The nuclear option, I fear, along with the Republicans complete opposition to everything during the Obama administration is two of those. This isn't how the government was designed to operate, but it has set the precedent. Short-term thinking may lead to long-term problems. In four years, if the Dems have the control, they will use the same tactics the Republicans are using now, and it's just not healthy.
As for the comment about, it's going to be a beating for 8 years? It's not about a beating. It's about a healthy, and effective Congress, and the way to accomplish that is to not throw out the rules. The rules were put in place to make both parties work together. Throw out the rules, and now there's no incentive to get input from both sides, and that's a bad thing. I'm glad to see a group of bipartisan Senators are behind a bill to save the filibuster as it forces the groups to work together.

I agree that it isn't a good thing to have it this way. But I don think the Dems deserved it. The people have spoken and there is no way a lame duck POTUS should attempt to appoint a SCOTUS in his last year of office.
Republicans have avoided the filibuster regarding SCOTUS going back. Dems have always kicked and screamed and made the process ugly.

In 2013, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid ( D-Nev) used the “nuclear option” to call for a vote to change the rules of the Senate with a simple majority. His call won 52-48............
The rule change that eliminated the ability to filibuster any presidential nominees...
“This is the way it has to be,” Reid said. Former President Barack Obama supported Reid’s rule change...
Well I guess you were right Dirty Harry...this is the way it has to be..

Reid limited the scope of his maneuver to appointments below the level of Supreme Court justice; for the Supreme Court, traditional filibuster and cloture rules would still apply. The fact that Reid left that exception is what brought us to the current faceoff.

The term "nuclear option" is analogy to nuclear weapons being the most extreme option in warfare...Reid blew up the-60-vote rule, with the SC Justice exception...Reid and the Democrat were able to ramrod rules changes through Congress.,, This allowed Obama to be able to pack the courts...
So, Mitch McConnell taking the lead from Sen Reid applied the nuclear option to Supreme Court nominee,..
What is good for the goose is good for the turtle ...

I do not care if laws are made by one administration are rescinded as majority sways. But let's have legislation do this and not an endless executive order parade. If this corrects the course of the near eben opinions split of the country. Where neither Hillary nor Trump even won a Majority in the popular vote Hillary taking a close nod in the plurality with a landslide victory in California. Our country is nearing a 50 50 split how is it ever possible to ever achieve 60% when one side does not want anything more that. Run out the clock game...?

Gridlock in Washington is going to favorable be diminished. This and restrict the amendment process and we may even pass a budget this year tax reform is achievable. Government shut down lowering and our credit rating should improve.

Yeah, my cousin is a plant manager there, and I have a couple friends that work there as well. My cousin travels to Mexico 2 weeks out of every month to help setup the factories in Mexico, and make sure they operate correctly. And part of the Carrier deal was that Carrier was to "invest" a certain amount of money into the facility. And they are absolutely standing by their word to do that. Except, they are investing in automation for the plant that still remains here in Indiana. Basically, us taxpayers in Indiana got a little tax increase to help Carrier invest in automating their machines so that he can claim he "saved jobs" now, even though those jobs will be long gone in 6 years. No jobs saved...tax increase. Sweet.

If a Supreme Court Justice retires in Trumps 3rd year, and the Democrats try and pull this....you'll be the first of many throwing a temper tantrum. Always try and think about what it would be like if the "other party" tried some of these tactics. If you would be upset, then it's probably not healthy what your party is doing.

Scalias death and surrounding events are controversial at best. He did not retire of his own free will.

I already know this tactic is shortsighted and Republicans will end up regretting it down the road, whether it's 8 years or 4 or whatever. Republicans will not hold a majority for the next 20 years or until your life is over. I assure you that's extremely unlikely and when the Democrats do have the majority, the Republicans should expect the Democrats to start pushing every single thing they want with a simple majority. I don't really think that's what they want so even if they can arrange the Supreme Court to reflect their values more, it's doubtful this move will help them in the long run.
