It is amazing to me how the Left will never defend, never defend the victim in a real life situation like this. This speaks volumes of the super minority party, again, the super minority party called Democrats.

If you're going to bring up sanctuary city laws also bring up the fact that he had been deported 20 times. So even when the system works...
Sadly, I don't think Trump ever had any intention to build a wall but the sanctuary city laws need to change.
Maybe the Wall should really be an electric fence like they make for dogs... Before someone is deported they are fitted with an unremovable custom shock collar and if they try to get back in they get zapped. Probably the best idea ever, I'm sure Trump will steal and say he thought of it. I'll give it to him, he needs a win.

How about you knock that crap off, it is totally classless for you to take the opportunity to politically bash when something disgusting like this happens.
You really need to find another outlet for your disdain, it is abhorrent how you constantly take every opportunity and in this case a really really bad one to make a stupid political point.
We all know you blame the left for all the ills in the world, there was no need to make a reply as you did...really really poor taste.

wall, Tell that to Kate's father as she died in his arms. Murdered by a foreign man in the same situation. My basic 2 sentences in post 3 were truthful. Not abhorrent.

Isn't immigration reform, deportation, sanctuary city laws, and the wall huge political issues that often cause division along party lines? Is this not a political forum? I agree that the muck-slinging gets ridiculous, and that the lengths people go to politicize isolated events often run the gamut from laughable to insulting, but in this instance it is warranted. I'm not a republican or a democrat. I'm conservative on some issues, liberal on others. On this particular issue? I must say I am strongly against sanctuary city laws. And it is a fact that sanctuary cities are heavily supported by political "lefties". What's so classless about stating that. Clsssness is ignoring the issue because maybe it makes your chosen political affiliation look bad.

it's not their fault because the media is horrible and republicans are worse at lying and misinformation, but people don't understand what sanctuary cities are (and aren't). there's not enough information in this article to assign fault, which most often lies with the federal agency, in my opinion, and their position is not legal in other situations.
that being said, there may be situations where sanctuary cities are real and don't do enough to help ICE, but again, you won't ever really know from these articles or republican pandering because they don't know how this works or don't take the time to look into each situation to see what really went wrong.,

I understand completely what a sanctuary city is (in this case he was last in the custody of Multnomah County, not the city of Portland). I didn't get my info on this story from a right-winged media source. I got it from the local news the day it happened. And I was in San Francisco, working maybe a mile from the scene, the day Kate Steinle was killed. These two events weren't in far off lands for me. They hit very close to home. It sucks that both cases get exploited for political gain. Kate Steinle's family was actually upset about this but the fact is it's a very real issue and it is politically divisive. So it's going to come up in political debates.

Bad things happen because there are bad people out there...not because some political party.
I get sick of hearing how one side is the cause for a death or misfortune. Bad things happen every day irregardless of the political garbage being tossed around in this thread.
Using a really really sad situation to make a political point is disgusting, it is awful and classless.

Bad enough he was deported 5 times so why exaggerate????? Not credible Stu...
It was 20 based on the local Portland news. So who is really exaggerating? Who really has an agenda here? You say being deported "5 times" in bold print like that makes him a model citizen. And what media source did you get 5 times from? Again, i'm quoting the local media. This isn't a new story to me. I didn't have to google it. It was on the 5 o'clock news for me the day it happened. And the 6 o'clock. And 10. And 11. Several channels. And the Oregonian newspaper. Where'd you get your figures?

Agreed, bad things happen to good people on a daily basis, but isn't this a "really really sad, disgusting situation" that never should of happened in the first place? And the full blame should be placed on the "Sanctuary City" releasing this monster within the confines of the United States.
Could this POS have eventually made his way back over the border and done the same thing? Yes. But why make it easier?
Lesson learned - just because Trump says something doesn't necessarily mean you need to discount it just because he said it.....

He has entry/removal from United States to/from Mexico 20 times
with at least 5 probation violations from re-entry according to court
documents filed in March 2017.
Records show the man having been deported no less than 13 times from the state of Oregon since 2008.
His latest charges include Sodomy in the First Degree..
Making Sergio a Sanctuary City Sodomite.....

Again, it was Multnomah County that released him is this instance but the point is still the same. Wall is right. Bad things happen because there are bad people. I just believe that if you have a bad person in custody who is in the country illegally they should be turned over to the proper authorities and deported. That's my belief and there is no political agenda behind it. If I had a "proverbial axe" I would've made a thread about this the day it actually happened and the story broke on the local Portland news. Not what feels like atleast a week later.

In sanctuary cities, illegal immigrants are still arrested if they commit crimes. Also federal government is free to arrest illegals but instead Portland police arrested the rapist.
Immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility. According to US Constitution, local and State governments have no obligation to enforce federal laws.
Overlooked is that both legal and illegal immigrants have lower crime rates than native Americans according to Cato institute. Bureau of justice services found that foreign born inmates comprise 4.6% of State and federal prisons population. According to American immigration council, 1.6% of foreign born men are imprisoned while 3.3% of US borns are imprisoned.

Here's where I read it was 5 times & yes it's 5 times too many I'm not disputing that.
Show me where it was 20 times. I'd be interested in seeing it.
I wasn't referring to Kate Steinle's killer when I said he'd been deported 20 times. I was referring to the subject of this thread. Learn to follow along before you attack someone's credibility.

You're right, they have no obligation. They should do it not because they are obligated but because it's in the best interest of their citizens and their officers. I'm not saying local and state law enforcement should necessarily take on the responsibility of the federal government and actively search out illegal immigrants. What I am saying is that if a local or state law enforcement agency has someone in custody, which means they've either committed or are suspected of a crime, and that person is in the country illegally... then for god's sake, turn them in to the proper authorities! Don't let them go free to subsequently rape old ladies!

I was referring to the "Illegal Immigrant Rapist Set Free Under Portland, Oregon's 'Sanctuary' Policy". He was actually released by Multnomah County and not Portland, Oregon but I digress...
To the best of my knowledge, Kate Steinle's killer has never even been accused of rape. All of his run-ins with the law were drug related. And she was killed in San Francisco, not Portland, Oregon.

you've somewhat identified part of the problem and wide misunderstanding of this term sanctuary city.
1. what right does the local jail have to hold someone who has finished his sentence at the local level. a federal agency saying, hey, would you guys hold that person, is not a legal basis to keep someone in jail. see the due process clause.
3. even if it was, how long are they supposed to, or allowd, to, hold someone without a warrant or court order until the feds pick this person up and they get to see a judge in immigration court.
4. also worth mentioning that the immigration laws are massive and very complicated. in many cases, we don't know that a person is in this country illegally, or perhaps entitled to the many forms of relief under the immigration laws, until he has seen an immigration judge and had those issues litigated in immigration court. criminal courts do not ever make this determination.
so, looking at this article, along with every other one i've seen on this sanctuary city issue, there is no way to tell who is at fault in this situation. however, the feds being completely responsible for immigration and the state and local agencies having no responsibility (and in many cases no ability) under immigration laws, the feds are usually the culprit.
