Rick, stop believing your generation is so great and its all the other generations fault.

Really pal take your blinders off and start looking at who has destroyed our country.

First off, yes govt is spending more money then they are taking in. But the question is why is that happening? 2 reasons

1. our population is growing

2.but the jobs are going down. so it really doesnt take a math major to realize that with an increased population and less jobs out there, more people will be needing the govt to spend more money.

Bottomline is we dont have enough people paying into the system to support our growing population.

You can slice and dice it anyway you right wingers want, but the truth is we have less people paying into the system because 1.the rich fatcats have every loophole created for them to get out of paying taxes and not contributing towards the running of the country and 2.those same fatcats are creating the jobs in other countries.

This is only gonna keep getting worse, when our population grows another 50 million.

so each generation is always gonna leave debt behind to the next generation, just because of sheer population growth.  So dont sit around believing your generation is gonna leave debt to the next generation, cause your full of it then.

Maybe when the regular folks would stop all this democrat against republican bullshit and start realizing who the bad guys really are, maybe the country can be saved from the greedy bastards destroying it for their own personal gain.

until then keep drinking the kool aid

I know several people who drink sodas and have excellent BMI.

I also know several people who drink sodas and can barely walk.

I hope you were joking though because if the government can ban ginormous sodas where will the banning end?

Outside of the rockstar Obama. Who do the dems have? Hillary is too tired of politics. Her girlfriend will likely not let her run anyway.

do a quick check on.
1) the childhood overweight / obesity rate
2) the adult overweight / obesity rate (and I am not even getting into hypertension, diabetes, stroke etc...)
3) The cost of care for obesity and obesity related diseases
4) The sugar content in soda
5) The cost imposed to "tax payers" because of the immense cost associated with obesity
6) etc...

Why is it any different than imposing an extreme tax on cigarettes?

Nobody wants to be told what to do but nobody wants to deal with the reality of the situation if things go unchecked

Not trying to be combative but it makes sense.

Guys easy way to see what's going on with our country. Watch the movie Idiocracy (2006) it's a fictional comedy but unfortunately you can see a lot of the movies parts materializing in our society.
For example we're not watering plants with gatorade yet but smarts aren't something we look up to anymore, reality TV of people getting beat up (wipeout, etc) is popular tv, and  the poor and uneducated have many more kids than the educated wealthy folk throwing off the workers/supporters ratio.
Again I know it's a fictional comedy but if you watch it it'll make you think it's a pretty good interpretation of society.

It is ironic I admit. As ironic as republicans wanting less government and then not allowing abortions.

I can do it also - the irony goes both ways.

Now back to this issue. You are correct in that it is not a ban. It is no different than a tax. You can still get the same volume of soda you just have to pay more for it.

Once again no different that a tax on smokes, booze etc... Do you have an issue with tax on smoke or that they even regulate who can smoke? If you really think about it the soda thing is not much different.

It is no different than trying to reduce that amount of saturated fats that restaurants can use, trying to regulate the food that schools serve the children for lunch, no different than trying to regulate the options available in vending machines at schools etc... There are many examples.

I will not go through all the numbers but I can provide them if you want but briefly -
- Approximately 1/3 of children in the US are overweight and/or obese (triple that of 3 decades ago).
- And it is estimated that over 50% of people in the US will be obese by 2030 (this number is a little higher depending on where you read).
- By 2030 it is estimated that the total healthcare costs associated attributable to obesity could be from 860 - 960 billion. Approximately 17% of US health expenses.

This does not even take into account the other diseases that obesity is a well known precursor for.

So if it is a small measure to try to have a healthier society than what is the issue?

And Rooster this is a significant stretch to say the least.  No one is saying to ban these things and it is not even possible. The soda "tax" is simply to making a small stride to aid in fighting against obesity.

There is a huge difference between the two.

saying republicans wanting less government is like saying crackheads want less crack.

mattbrot, i think you meant trans fats not saturated fats, right?

i would have to come down against regulating sodas but i understand it.  but that's a good point.  how can one be ok with regulating and/or taxing cigarettes but not sodas?

sorry but i'm calling bullshit on this small stride, they don't give a rats ass about the health of the populace, otherwise you would see them renounce their failed science ie. the food pyramid, and immediately stop subsidizing the high hell out of HFCS production

There is nothing more effective then good information, and the government seems hell bent (by their track record) on making people less healthy, not looking out for their health. THis is evidenced by decades of financing bad science and installing bad policy after bad policy.

fruit juice often has more sugar then soda.
NO SUGAR ADDED 100% cranberry juice sounds healthier then soda, right?

well it has 40% more sugar per serving

i don't hear you advocating for taxing fruit juice, so your intentions come off as lame

mattbrot, i think you meant trans fats not saturated fats, right?

i would have to come down against regulating sodas but i understand it.  but that's a good point.  how can one be ok with regulating and/or taxing cigarettes but not sodas?

Yes.  Thank you for the correction.

And my stance in post #53 is a little strong. I agree that the "tax" on sodas is a slippery slope and can see both sides. But there is no denying that there is a real public health issue that is going on here. And I can easily see and understand the rationale for trying to take measures (as small as they might be) to try to fight against it. This happens all the time in lots of parts of our lives.

Lets not forget that it is not a ban - it is essentially a tax.

Be Easy -- Of course there are MANY MANY things as bad or worse than soda. And yes you are correct that there is a huge irony when schools replace sodas in vending machines with powerade etc... And yes there are many many things that the government can and should fix if they want to take this "healthier society stance".

But does all of that mean that this small measure is not a step in the right direction?

so if they are not able to change everything than they should make no attempt to change anything?

Where is the logic there?
