a 61-year-old woman, Desiree Fairooz, is being prosecuted by the DOJ for laughing at Alabama Republican Senator 's claim
that Sessions “Treat[s] All Americans Equally”.
in 1986, then US Rep Shelby ran a campaign ad saying that Sessions, who was a U.S. attorney at the time, had referred to the Ku Klux Klan as “good ole boys.”
According to DOJ prosecuorts Faroz “laugh amounted to willful ‘disorderly and disruptive conduct’ intended to ‘impede, disrupt, and disturb the orderly conduct’ of congressional proceedings.”
If convicted, Desiree Fairooz faces up to six months in jail, and a fine of up to $500.
Fairooz is also facing another misdemeanor charge for “allegedly parading, demonstrating or picketing within a Capitol, evidently for her actions after she was being escorted from the room.”
Capitol Police did not arrest Joe Wilson for screaming "You lie" during President Obama's State of the Union address
nor was Wilson subjected to disciplinary actions.
Wilson was forced to apologize for violating congressional decorum with the heckling, but he benefited in the end: Shortly after the incident, an aide confirmed Wilson had raised more than $1 million in campaign contributions thanks to the outburst.
