If this pick doesn&#x27;t hit, that will be it for me: 6 years or 2 years or impeachment ()I am completely gobsmacked by this line:Illinois -2 over Rutgers I&#x27;m riding with LOVIE.HOLY SHII****For Rutgers to win this game, this is what they must overcome:1. Illinois is 2-2 and coming off a bye week. All the time needed to study Rutgers flaws and there are too many to count on a team that lost 149-20 to OSU, Kansas and Buffalo before losing to Indiana this week. This is still very much the same exact team, if not a bit more confident with a very green QB still learning. Baby steps were taken. BABY steps. Not trampoline leaps...2. This is a revenge game for Illinois after RU broke a 16 game Big Ten losing streak to them last year.RU couldn&#x27;t beat anyone in the Big 10. That all changed last year.They beat the Illini in their house 35-24 in an incredibly embarrassing loss for Lovie and Co.Mind you, last years Rutgers team was a team that beat a bowl winning Purdue team (you think they&#x27;d be Purdue this year? Hell no!) and one that IMO, was a better RU team than this one by a tangible margin.This is what Chris Ash said about LAST YEAR&#x27;S team:"Nobody thought we could come in here and win this game"He treated it like Buster Douglas beating Mike Tyson, popping champagne in the city of Champaign. Literally, the scene in the locker room was like the 86 Mets after the ball got through Buckner&#x27;s legs!They didn&#x27;t forget that game folks or the raucous celebration afterwards in their house.3. It&#x27;s put up or shut up time for Lovie too...Lovie is on a hotter seat than Ash, I can promise you that. Building on a 2-2 start to 3-2 will go a long way with the AD.

4. Penn State - Compare and Contrast Output and EffortI want you to understand something about Rutgers. During Ash&#x27;s tenure and in the Big 10, they do NOTHING against the following teams and I do mean nothing:OSU Penn State MichiganYou KNOW how bad it&#x27;s gotten. I do not have to list the debacles. This in now 3 YEARS in to change things under Ash.In fact Rutgers has scored 6 pts and amassed 289 yards COMBINED against Penn State the past two years under Ash. In the Big 10, they have been outscored 102-9 in Ash&#x27;s and Flood&#x27;s tenure. They are DEAD before the opening flip.Compare this to what the Illini did last week: They LEAD PSU in the third quarter. Yes PSU eventually obliterated them but Rutgers may be a half a DECADE away from leading Penn State in the third quarter home or road!It showed life. It showed a competent game plan from the coaching staff. It showed far more effort than what Rutgers has shown this season outside of a de facto FCS game and some fortuitous bounces against Indiana.I&#x27;ll take the Illini every which way till Saturday on this point ALONE.Finally,5. Was the loss to Indy a building block?IMO, not really. The first series was going to end with -5 yards if not a roughing the passer penalty. AN unsporstmanlike conduct penalty got them another 15 on the same drive. And before ya know it, Ash had his first TD as a college QB. You can&#x27;t move the ball for the other team 30 yards in one drive. That was RU&#x27;s only pts until the middle of the 4th quarter and it was gift-wrapped for them.Then with Indy up 24-7 and driving to put the game away, they fumbled in RU territory with 10 minutes left. To their credit, RU took advantage and made the game end within a TD.It was a deceptively mediocre performance deemed somewhat &#x27;good&#x27; without much substance, making the bettor think they will capitalize this week on an admittedly weaker team in the Illini. But to say that weaker team will lose straight up? I don&#x27;t buy it at ALL. Especially not giving under a FG and only 1 pt beats us on the spread.When the line goes up, and you know it will, and many guys are not here to read this on a Sunday, you, the reader will be a good enough capper to determine for yourself whether to take this at Illini -3 or worse.It&#x27;s coming back to us this week Gents after Indy laid an egg ATS. As I&#x2019;ve said from the get-go, the credit card scandal that got 8 players dismissed, almost all from the defense, still matters. This quote is notable. From my local RU beat writer, Steve Politi:PASSING DEFENSEThis is not the way Chris Ash wants to play defense, dropping into a soft zone because his pass rushers can&#x27;t get pressure on the quarterback and because he doesn&#x27;t have enough depth defensively to make substitutions when players are tired. This was the warning I gave with Purdue RSW under 6 wins. Brohm is a very good coach. Light years better than Ash.

But he relies too much on gimmick plays like this one. Creative, but not a good sign when your longest pass of the season comes form a halfback, and it will only fool so many teams...
