The reason why the NHL will always remain a joke! No disrespect to Habs fans here,but it just blows my mind how you give a team a point for losing a game.
 
I know this has been discussed a few times in the forum,but i was talking about it with some friends last night so i felt like venting again.

Yes but they didn't clinch by losing this game in OT.
They clinched because they have now 93 points.
The Regular Season is not about 1 Game.

Yep, they got to get rid of that stupid point!  Good new is they are talking about it and hopefully they get rid of it next year

I agree Cad,but i am just saying that standings may be a little different without those OT points.......more so last year than this year,heck the Flyers would be in 6th instead of 4th right now.

I just dont agree with it.

it doesnt make sense to be happy about a loss
 
but look at the battles at the end of the year in the east and western conference as teams fight for the last couple playoff spots. that is what the nhl wants. makes for better hockey.

I agree completely. No disrespect to Vancouver fans, but that loser point is why the race for 1st in the NW division is so tight. Does it make sense that Vancouver could get 1st place after winning fewer games than Calgary? Not to me.

4th place (and home ice) in the east looks like it will be decided by loser points.

St. Louis could squeak into the playoffs ahead of Nashville with, you guessed it -- fewer wins.

I wouldn't mind it so much if they made regulation wins worth 3 points so every game was "worth" the same number of points.

we might as well bring the tie back also.
 
since what is the point of the shootout if its not even used in the playoffs. is it fair to lose a point because of something that is a coin toss? just another sideshow. another tool for the nhl to try and sell the game.

The only reason the Flyers were close to the Devils all year and the only reason they will have home ice in Round 1 is because of the ridiculous amounts of loss points they have.

I liked last night the Ottawa broadcaster called OT sudden victory and explained "I cant bring myself to call it sudden death when the loser gets a point"

Also, its bad enough to get a point for losing a shootout but getting one for losing in OT is even worse

Happens in soccer all the time, when you get a bottom feeder playing against the big fish.  They don't even try to score, they try to play for a 0-0 tie at the end.

all reg season (points ) records have changed ,since adding the shoot out.
shoot out is here to stay for reg season.can't have games going
until ? ( for tv times,they want those time slots. $$$ )
3 points for reg win
2 points for crap shoot win,ot win
1 point for crap shoot , ot loss
 
should see way less games even going to ot
and it will reduce the # of teams playing a boring trap for half the
game , to take their chance in the shoot out (nyr. 1st 65 games of the year)
 
so  we change most of the team points records again
 
the league messed up all these records already,
all we really got was less quality hockey

ya because watching that game and the end result it was clear montreal wanted to play for a 0-0 tie.

and u dont want them to be happy they made the playoffs? i dont understand. its not like it was game 41 and they got 1 point. it secured their place in the postseason.

Hopefully they put it back to how it was and we will see the different compete levels for each in overtime but the shootout MUST go then as to play a game and not get a point cause the other TEAM has a couple of guys who are amazing at breakaways is moronic and takes away the whole concept of team sport.
 
 The shootout is entertainment devised mostly for the American hockey fan as was the glowing puck and other little entertainment gimmicks that destroy the purity of hockey.

Not so much American or Canadian but an attempt to attract the casual fan or non hockey fan.

Ive been saying since they started trying to change the game.....if someone doesnt like the sport,changing the rules and point structures is not going to make them start watching all of a sudden and the same goes for the casual fan.I don't like watching basketball and changing the game or trying different things wouldn't make me change my mind to start watching it.

I like the idea of the "countdown" system of 3 for regulation win, 2 for OT or shootout win. 1 for OT or shootout loss and 0 for regulation loss. you could have some wild position swings late in the season which I think would add to fan interest.
 
either that OR just dump the point system and go with team won-lost record like every other sport where there are no ties like baseball and basketball.
 
but WHATEVER they decide for the regular season, they better damn sure NOT bring the SHOOTOUT into the PLAYOFFS    NBC can go FUCK themselves

The 2010 Winter Classic is being held at Fenway Park...it really should be Montreal...but NBC flat out said...they do not want a Canadian team....so, it will be Philly or Washington....why not the Rangers? That would be two original six teams....

It will be the RANGERS fuck NBC. Montreal has the most cups in the League but we don't want to have a Canadian team on. Idiots.

As far as this point system goes, lossing in OT you shouldn't get a point. Bottom line.

If they ever go to the SOCCER point system I will most likely stop watching hockey.
