Ovi also did not have the supporting cast Crosby had last season... you can't possibly say Ovi shoots too much, this isn't basketball, good things happen when the puck flies toward the net. With Knuble, Semin and Backstrom all having good years, and Theo actually playing decent in net the Caps have a great shot at the Cup this year.
really? Good things happen when you shoot the puck from the blue line when you have a 3 on 1? That makes no sense. Go back and watch the series. Ovechkin pulled up many times when he had an odd man rush and would fire from the blue line. Crosby, on the other hand, actually sets his teammates up to make a QUALITY shot on net. Ovie is a shooter, he will never be able to make the passes Crosby does and that is what seperates them...

How many times during a hockey game do teams have 3 on 1s? Not very often. That series went to 7 games and the difference was not Crosby vs. Ovi, it was the supporting cast. Ovi shoots more, but he also can make the killer pass, and someone hitting in your rebound is just as good as a final pass. This season Alex has 11 more assists than Crosby in 7 less games played. He also leads the league in +/- at +43... Crosby is +9.
He is only a shooter? Please, that is a dumber comment than the one that started this thread. Crosby is obviously an excellent player, but Ovechkin is better.

Come on, last year's Caps had the talent to match Pittsburgh and they didn't, case closed. Obv you are biased against the Pens as you are a Caps fan, probably part of the same crowd that chanted "Crosby sucks" when you were down 5-0 last year....

I agree with you there, but you have to remember that Sykora did not play in the playoffs last year. It was a mix of Kunitz/Satan on Crosby's line and even sometimes Tyler Kennedy, whom Semin is better than all of them. They also had the best scoring defenseman in the NHL last year in Green.

You saying Ovi is dirty would be like me calling Crosby a diver and a crybaby. Ovi plays hard, no doubt, and I'll admit sometimes he overdoes it or is a bit reckless, but I refuse to say there is any intent other than to give his best to help the team win.
That's just the way he plays, balls-out 100%. The NHL is just not used to it's superstars playing like that in all facets of the game.
As for some of the other comments above regarding the Caps/Pens supporting cast last year, etc., Semin and Backstrom weren't the same players that they are this season. As for goaltending, Varly may have had a couple good games in that series, but Fleury was much more consistent.
When you look at any statistical category across the board this year, Ovi has Crosby beat (except goals where they are tied)... and he has played 7 less games. Also, from a leadership standpoint, Ovi doesn't even have to score to help his team... just look at what the hit on Jagr did for his team on Sunday. He raises the level of all the Caps when he is on the ice, scoring or not, probably the reason he leads the NHL at +43.
There, that's my piece, enough said about this. ![]()

2 Cup apperances 1 Cup to show for. Less talented linemates. You dont always have to refer to stats to prove who the better player is. Some skills and talent a player brings dosnt always show up on the stat sheet. I will always give Ove the edge as a goal scorer. All bets are off after that IMO.

really? Tell me how bad ovie hurt his team in the Pittsburgh series last year... Guy shoots 1,000 times a season, Crosby makes his team better by actually sharing the puck and WINNING. When Ovie wins a cup, then come talking...

Hmmmm you look at their head to head stats and it says another storey and why is it when the action goes the other way Ovie freezes...is he allergic to defense? Sure looks like it most nights especially during the playoffs lastyear...lol

True that.
The Canadiens looked really strong last night. Russia looked like a team that was just thrown together at the last minute, while Team Canada looked like they had been playing together for years. Malkin had a nightmare game. Ovi just failed to make an impact. Oh well, as long as he keeps up form for the Caps, I could care less about Russia!
