i said the same thing to my friends when we were watching the game. although i suggested it and thought it could be the right call, when i thought about it more i think it would have been a bad choice. first off the colts coverage units are not very good and they are going against a great KR in sproles. also you can't lose the game in regulation if you punt unless you give up a TD but if you take the safety and punt from the 20, a FG loses the game for you. nice thought but in this instance i agree with Dungy's decision.

I agree with Dungy. I wouldn't have put my team in a position to lose if SD gets the FG. I strongly disagree with the 3rd and 2 play call to pass. Without the Manning sack................the Colts never would have been at the 1.

If you punt the ball from the 1 yd line and San Diego does go down and tie the game at least you have a shot at winning the coin toss and winning the game in OT
I don't know about you guys but I sure felt like if Manning would have won that coin toss the Colts would have won the game

Bellichik did it once. I thought about it at the time. You could lose rather than get tied. I think there would have to be less time left to do it. 2 minutes is too much, if you are only putting them back 20 yards.

when belechick did it, he still needed a touchdown to win either way so it made sense, parcells did it too while coaching the jets, but he was up by 6...took the safety and was still up 4....the colts did the right thing, because they could still give up a FG and still be tied....doing what vanzack is suggesting would have only had them up one with plenty of time for a FG to lose the game...too questionable of a coaching move IMO even if it worked.

True, but you lose most of it (~ 14 yds) on coverage return. SD ave Kick-off/Punt ret is 24.0/10.3. Even though Indy is punting away, you would use the KO ret numbers here.

when it was 3rd and 2 dumb ass dungy should have called a running play. worst case you punt from the 8 yard line not the 2. anyways colts loss dont matter anymore im pissed
Passing was the right thing to do.Although I didn't like splitting Adai out wide as your sole focus and having him run a twelve yard in route. Try to get it to Gonzales or Clark(that dude was money for two yards all night - nothing more though, I think he's gotten slower).
Anyway I agree with others, there probably would have been some penalty called on the kick, but I was thinking the same thing too. Ultimately just too much time left. A first down was paramount - they should have thrown on second down.

The question posed here is an interesting one that has both upside and down. I do agree the additional yardage coupled with no rush gives the kicking team an edge as far as distance and coverage. The very idea of taking the safety with 2:00 left is too risky but becomes a must at 1:00-1:25.
