On a free kicker, the defenders cant leave the line of scrimmage until the ball is kicked. So, unlike a real punt, you dont have gunners that get to start a sec or two before the ball is actually kicked. Plus, the other team will block like a kickoff, so the advantage is for the returners. Having the punter at the line of scrimmage with the defenders is a disadvantage compared to a regular punt. The punt team is losing the 15yd head start on the coverage. So, the defenders have to run a longer distance.
No way do you take a safety & leave SD that much time to get a couple first downs and kick a FG to BEAT you.
You do realize that you can kick off instead of punt right?
So if you kick off from the 20 instead of the 30, what kind of field position can you expect to give up?
They actually punt for the hang time of the punt, and because they think they get BETTER coverage than a kick off. If a kickoff averages the 25 yard line from the 30, then isnt it safe to assume it would be the 35 from the 20? And then if you punt it even better?

NO WAY.
think about how much time is left, and how easy it is to get into FG range...and now you lose if they make it instead of get a chance in OT.

Once again, not 18 yards, more like 33 yards.

The bold above is exactly the point.
