5 or 10 years ago I would have laughed at trapped lines, but the gambling world and NFL have made monumental changes to make this realistic since then. It’s all about fan entertainment. Referees know the marketing intentions of their employers. It’s about entertainment of the fans. There will never be direct communication of the NFL to their referee crews concerning this but they know what their employers desire so they have plausible deniability.
