Sorry, but all those people that are saying it was the worst call ever don't understand anything about football.

If he runs it and it doesn't go in....then what?

You call timeout and you are forced to throw on 3rd down or you don't get a fourth down.  The Patriots know that and can defend against a pass.  Sack and the game is over.

Throw it on second and you have 3 strong chances with the Patriots forced to defend run or pass on each.

The right call doesn't always work.  I think their win probability was higher this way.  At the time, I was thinking please don't run it here.

    ??????

Even the coach took responsibility for not running the ball. You have the most ridiculous running back to get a yard. Why throw it? This is an indefensible call in that spot.

coaches don't overthink it like you are right now...again its a numbers game, go with the highest probability plays and running it in that spot is the ONLY way to go

Also, I see some real logical disconnect in the 20/20 hindsight analysis that is out there.

"It was obviously the wrong call because everybody knows running is better in that scenario"

    AND

"The Patriots knew the pass was coming"

These facts can't both be simultaneously true yet so many seem to believe both of them.

That is my exact point.  It wasn't the highest probability play because it limited their options on 3rd and 4th down.

2nd down, you run it. If you get stopped call a TO. You still have 22 seconds left. At that stage you probably have to throw it twice. But you don't call and inside route where a defender can jam or cut the route.

Wilson should have thrown it away. Bad call imo but he deserves some of the blame

U run it twice and then if need be u use ur final timeout before fourth down clearly enough time to do so. Seahawks panicked being left with only one timeout after kearse catch. Wasted two timeouts on that freaking drive

I don't know why I even bother in this case but you're either delusional or you had a wager on the Patriots. How the f uck can you honestly with a straight face say that was the right call? You have plenty of time for two calls, one timeout in the bank and Lynch in the backfield who just ran the previous play for eight yards to put his team in that spot. It's past your bedtime kid, go and get a good sleep.   As I said at the outset, why do I even bother?

I agree with everyone here. When you have lynch and russell Wilson and you have the ball on the 1 yard line, you have to run it. Pound it to beast mode or maybe a play action Bootleg. Anything but a pass.

I'm pretty sure that I am the only one on here that consistently made money betting football.

    Worst play ever?

What was the probability of success running it on 2nd down?

What would the prob of success be on 3rd and 4th with 0 timeouts?

What would it be on 3rd and 4th with 1 timeout?

Come up with realistic numbers and come back to me.

Dude you know nothing obviously. Absolutely no reason to throw it there. Inexcusable..

Oh yeah Carroll said he wanted to waste that play. Yes absolutely what you want to do there. You guys are both brilliant

You don't know what you are talking about!!
Beast ran 4 yards for first play.  what makes you think he cannot run for 2 more yards, or wilson run it in??  3 more downs man, burn more clock as well before doing something dumb!!  Lynch can get 1 or 2 yards the entire game, so what are you talking about??
So what if NE knows they are running the beast

i agree with op it was a great play by butler.  you cant risk getting stuffed and having to burn your last timeout.  then youre forced to throw on 3rd and 4th down.
