Doubleupyourbookie4life- At the time when he was drafted he was a huge role model to all African American Athletes and thats a fact. He revolutionized the QB position, giving hope to Black athletes wanting to play QB.. Michael Vick paved the road for many QB's currently in the NFL to this date, not to mention all the collegiate athletes.
It seems this is a popular statement amongst people,
"Vick was never a great Football Player, just a great athlete."
I agree with half the statement, but the rest has to be explained to me. Can anyone enlighten me as to what makes you a great Football Player?
C'mon dude... He killed and tortued hundreds of dogs. How does that compare to bedwetting???? The one is a bad habit that kids grow out of. The other is a heinous and downright sick crime that requires a sick mind to commit...
As far as paving the way for black QB's goes, I think Warren Moon did that. There are a few others, going back to Joe Gilliam, Randal Cunningham, Doug Williams, Steve McNair... need I go on? The fact is, he didn't do anything for black quarterbacks. It had already been done. And he didn't revolutionize the QB position either. He wasn't good enough to do that. Yes he gave some defensive coordinators some headaches, but they usually just planned on Vick making errant throws and interceptions, and usually he would come through.
Michael Vick is nothing more than a Kordell Stewart. A tremendous athlete that just really cant play QB that well. Kordell was perhaps the most impressive athlete to ever play QB until Vick came along. If you could pull up a highlight reel of Stewart, your jaw would drop at watching some of the crazy stuff he would pull off. And his numbers are comparable to Vick's. But in the end, he couldn't get it done consistently. In the AFC Championship game against NE, his play kept the Steelers from advancing to the Super Bowl and he never did recover from that. That game crushed his confidence. And that was it for him.
What makes you a great football player?
I'm not sure if I can answer this one, but I'll give it a shot. To be a great football player, you must be willing to practice and prepare (for opponents) like few others do. Even the offseason must be a chance for you to get ahead of the competition. It must be a burning passion for you every day. Not six months of the year. To be a great quarterback you need to have a good head on your shoulders. You need to know how to lead. You need a strong arm. You need to make good reads. You need to have a drive to succeed like few have. Your thirst for competition and pressure must be unrelenting. And you must win championships (unless your Dan Marino). You need to be able to know when to throw it away. When to take a sack, and when to run like Hell to avoid a sack. And when you're running, are you looking downfield to extend the play? You need to have a quick release. You need to be able to thread the needle and you need to know when you cant thread the needle. Your footwork needs to be good. I could go on, but I think I've covered most of it...
Some quarterbacks have "it" and some dont. In fact, very few do. And Vick doesn't. He never did. I'll never forget when I saw him after a game in a press conference. He was sitting at the mic and talking to the reporter that asked him a question and you couldn't even see the man's eyes because his hat was pulled down so low. Men of character and leadership do not present themselves like this. However, shady people do. Punks do. Criminals do. I guess he's served his sentence and yada yada yada... If he gets to play football again more power to him. But dont expect him to win any Super Bowls. He just doesn't have it.
