dumbest decision of Norv Turner's life on the onside kick

oh and to address the title of this thread................Norv has done FAR dumber things that this

He has done more stupid things, but for SURE it was a big mistake.

4th and 1 from the Jets 25= punt

4th and 1 from the Chargers 25= go for it

The odds that you get the onside dont make the risk of not getting it worthwhile.

The kicker is the one most to blame in this game though.

Onside kick was idiotic

I also might add missing 3 makable field goals in a close game...dont help any

Penalties, botched FGs, QB out of sync, predictable LT run plays, coaching miscue (on-side kick)!!!

Bottom line is the Jets were having trouble moving the ball through the air. The Chargers pass rush and D is sick. Norv Turner should have kicked deep and played D with all that time left.

They wouldn't of went for it on 4th and 1 from there own 30. Plus SD would of got better field position on the punt.

doing the onside kick they have 2 chances to get the ball back...kicking deep they have 1 chance...it was the right play they needed a stop anyway

Yea, should of kicked it deep.

The odds of recovering a onside kick when the receiving team is expecting it is very, very small, and there was plenty of time left to kick deep.

With a rookie QB, and that defense, and the need to run time off the clock , no-way they attempt a pass.

Chargers put 8 or 9 in the box and easily stop them in 3 downs.

And get the ball back in decent field position needing only a field goal.

Yea, I kick it deep there every time.

 

They have 2 chances to get the ball back, however, those chances are far from being equal.

What you give-up by not recovering the onside kick is far more than the very, very small odds to recover a onside kick when the receiving team is expecting it.

it's a mistake IMO because if you kick the onside kick and the Jets do not get the first down, there is a good chance for them to kick the fg to make it a 6 point game but if they kick it deep, if their defense can stop the Jets, they will get the ball back with a chance to tie it with a fg.  

it was the right call. either way they have to stop the Jets 3 and out. They didn't even do that so game over.

So you think at 4th and 1 from their 25 they GO FOR IT?

They punt it period, especially with how great their punter was in the game.

Good opinions both ways.  This was a VERY close call.  Reasonable minds can differ on this one, and you have to remember that the coach knows more about some things than we do.  Maybe he knew his kicker could give them a good chance to recover, which he did.

BOTTOM LINE, who says the Jets don't run the ball three times and pick up the first down after San Diego kicks it deep?...then the game is over anyway....you take a shot with the onside kick...no question about it...

excellent point.....my initial reaction when I saw them line up was...this is a mistake, then I witnessed quite honestly the best attempt I've ever seen at an onsides kick.......jump 50/50 ball all the way

  I couldn't agree more with both of these statements. 

I tried to warn you for weeks the Chargers were complete and utter frauds.

If SD kickoff the Jets are pinned inside their own 20 as their return team was playing for the onside.  Much better chance of stopping the Jets deep in their own territory in 3 plays than recovering an onside kick!  They still would have had to make the stops but bottom line is 4th down from anywhere in their own territory = PUNT and the Chargers have just over a min. to get into field goal range for another Kaeding miss. 

Norv Turner is a DOUCHE.  His play calling was atrocious, his team was unprepared taking penalty after penalty and they let the Jets hang around just long enough in the first half when they were dominating.

This wasn't a "close call".

Not kicking away when the Jets were lined up for onside kick was completely moronic. 

If Bolts kick deep against onside coverage, there is no great return hypothesis, Bolts keep them inside their 30 and then need a 3 and out.  That's the only way to play it.

Norv didn't even consider a 4th and short, I guarantee you.  He was only thinking: "how do I get the ball back". And the only scenario where he envisioned not getting was a recovery by NYJ and a 1st down on 1st, 2nd or 3rd. 

Your wrong, they did stop the Jets in 3 downs, it was 4th down the Jets went for it "because of the onside kick", it was the onside kick that gave the Jets the win.

Who says they run three times and get 1 yard, that logic works both ways, that's why you kick deep.

And the evidence showed they Chargers did stop them in 3 down.

The problem with a onside kick is the chances to recover are soooo very low if the receiving team knows it's coming, that should be used as only a very last resort when it's the only possible senerio in which you can win, and that was not the case here.

And one of the reasons Norv Turner has very little success coaching in the NFL as a head coach, he makes bone-headed foolish decisions.

It doesn't matter how good the onside attempt was, it cost them the game. A deep kick would have allowd them to put at least 9, probably 10 in the box, and forced the Jets to punt on 4th instead of going for it ! Turner took the pressure off Ryan and the Jets when he hit the panic button. See you around Norv, wait til next year you goof ! What kills me is that I think he is a half ass good coach and think he gets picked on unfairly, and then he does this in a playoff game. WTF !!!
