Why doesn't the NFL just stop a drive and flip a coin? If its heads, they give the offense an extra 25 yards for no reason. If the offense scores, you can still blame the defense. I mean, they could have stopped them.
The coin flip in overtime is like an unfair head start. A head start doesn't mean you win the race. You can still lose a race with a head start. But its stupid and its arbitrary and there is no conceivable reason to have one.
Look, the NFL was different when this rule originated. Kickers were much worse then. Offenses weren't as good relative to defenses, either. The coin flip made sense then because it was quick and easy and the winner didn't gain that much of an advantage. They gain a huge edge now. There is no reason for it whatsoever, other than that some people apparently fear change.

Remember the XFL rule. They put the ball on the ground, one man from each team 10 yards from the ball, blow the whistle. Whoever gets the ball receives the KO.
