Bob Costas on overtime

I've always felt that the NFL overtime process is asinine.  What other sport allows the ultimate decision to rest on a coin toss.

blame it on the defense for unable to stop and get the ball back...

I love the sudden death format but I've always said field goals should not be allowed. Either you win on a touchdown or safety.

Or if people say that will lead to too many ties then have it so you can only kick a FG in the last 5 minutes of the OT period.

I pray they don't adopt something similar to that crap ass college system.

The ultimate decision is not based on a coin toss. If you don't want your game to be decided on a flip, find a way to win in regulation OR find a way to call the correct side of the coin.

I actually like the college format a lot better than NFL.  I don't really like the short field aspect, but that each team gets a crack at it.  If you think about it the current format tremendously favors the team that wins the coin toss.  After a full game, defenses are going to be more fatigued than offenses, so the team on offense has an advantage and the other offense doesn't get a chance to answer back.  At the very least though they should disallow field goals.

So the teams play each other to a tie through 4 quarters and to decide the outcome you give one side a chance to score based on a coin toss.  You're right, teams should start drafting psychics to help on coin tosses.  I'm not saying that they coin toss is the absolute decider of the game, but it does give one team a huge advantage to win the game.

I like the bidding system idea.

The ref starts counting yards off backwards starting at the 30.  When one of us puts our hand up, the opponent gets the ball at that yardline.

That would be totally fair and it wouldn't take any longer. 

In other words, we would both take the ball at the 20 yard line, but I let you have it on the 15 instead of taking it at my 15.

Play extra quarters until there is a winner but shorten the qrt's to 10 Minutes

Adopt the old soccer shootout rule!  I say give five players (non kickers) from each team a chance to kick field goals from either 25 or 30 yards out using a tee.  The winner is the team that kicked the most field goals.  If still tied after 5 kicks, continue with sudden death kick, backing each successive player up five yards on a successful try until one team makes it and the other misses.

FGs should be eliminated from the entire game. Why should a "non-player" decide a game?

To increase red zone scoring, make the end zones 20 yards deep like in Canada. Of course, this would have to be phased in as not all current stadiums are all able to increase their endzones.

But, back to OT, I like the college system, but would move it back to the 50. Why give them a FG for not gaining  a yard? The other team should be given a chance to get the equalizer.

A World Cup should never be decided by penalty kicks. It's silly. Play till somebody drops!

I'm in the minority here, I love it the way it is and hope it never changes.  Also winning the flip isn't such a big deal like everyone makes it out to be.  I'm not sure of the accuracy of this now, but last year a respected source had done the research and the team that wins the toss in OT only wins the game on that drive 60% of the time, so its a pretty small edge anyway, hence why its stayed the same

It's actually more like 73% of the time the winner of the coin flip wins the OT. And on the very first drive. And usually with a FG by a "player" who does not "play" the game of football.

A FG is a freak play. At least a foul shot in basketball or a penalty shot in hockey or soccer is a play that resembles what goes on during the rest of the game. What is a FG? Kicking a ball through goal posts. It's like a carnival game. It has NOTHING to do with the game of football. I'd rather see the QB attempt to throw the football through a tire hung at the end of the stadium. It would be more representative of the actual game.

In baseball, they just keep playing the game and the other side gets their at bats if the other team scores in the top of the inning.

OK, have at me, all you "purists" that don't want change, even if it makes perfect logical sense.

Im with the minority on this one.  if a team has a problem then heres my advice, win the game in 60 minutes like your fuckin supposed to.  Also as the old saying goes "defense wins championships".  Do you really think the 2000 Ravens would gain any advantage by having the ball first?  Maybe this would not be such an issue if thr NFL hadn't made rule changes that are so offensively favored.
