Oakland taxpayers wouldn't fork over their cash, electing to spend it on schools, hospitals and city services instead. So Davis will just move his Raiders, in order to grab cash.
NFL owners justify taxing citizens to subsidize themselves, claiming "new jobs" and "improved infrastructure" and the other "economic activity" that will ensue. West Virginia's Econ-Prof. Brad Humphreys' in-depth studies have proven that a new stadium brings “no economic benefit.” All it does is move municipal monies to an NFL team, when a city's monies could have gone elsewhere for the city's own collective good. The NFL owners' claimed "benefits" are always way overstated and fictitious on purpose. And so the economic rationales for a new stadium in Vegas are flat-out bogus, but the taxes on the citizens will be real and the highest ever squeezed out of a city's citizens.
Nevada's Gov. Sandoval made up the "Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee last year to chart what infrastructure improvements would keep tourism humming in Las Vegas. The majority of its 11 members were from the casino industry, including the president of two properties belonging to the Sands Corp., whose Chairman & CEO is one Sheldon Adelson, now one of Vegas' most powerful men. He just bought out the Las Vegas Review-Journal last year to sway the public on this "great for the public in general" deal. LVRJ is by far the biggest newspaper in Vegas. So now LVRJ will no longer report on the synagogue sessions wherein Adelson met with Davis. The deal they plotted has the Raiders offering to put up $500 million for a new stadium — most of which would have to come from the NFL — and Adelson would contribute $650 million, and the final slice of $750 million must come from Clark County, and thus Vegas. What Adelson gets for his $650 million was not divulged.
Next, this group went to the Las Vegas Tourism Committee, which included one of the presidents in Adelson’s companies who forced its hand-picked board to totally back every aspect within the new stadium idea, then promptly commissioned an "economic study." This fake study concluded, of course, that the combo of a small increase in the hotel tax plus an upsurge in economic activity due to the new stadium would cover the county’s $750 million burden.
They're pretending that new tourists to Las Vegas would pay everything via a "hotel tax" — so NOT Las Vegas taxpayers. But it's improbable that at least one-third of the 65,000 fans at a game would not be Las Vegans but out-of-towners who'd stay in a hotel for 3.2 days and spend $375 million each year.
Thus, at least 217,000 people each year must fly to Vegas just to watch the Raiders play football. Even if that many seats could be set aside just for tourists, the LVTC's econ study is still misleading, stating their dreamy assumptions that this new stadium: • Will attract a 2nd bowl game (besides the one it has now); • Will double all attendance figures; • Will attract two neutral-site CFB bowl games each year; • Will host the very biggest events each year — like the NCAA Final Four, like the Republican National Convention, like the Academy Awards ceremony (¿ not Hollywood ?)
"LVTC said it would take 25,000 people to build it, when it's usually more like 3,000,” said Roger Noll, Stanford University Sports Economist who advised some stadium opponents. “They claim it will add 40,000 permanent jobs,” he said, “No sane person would believe a number like that.”
Roger Noll concluded: “The fix was in.”
LVTC held its one & only meeting to allow critics to have their say — they limited them to a mere three minutes apiece.
After the committee issued its report, the governor called the legislature into a special session to ram through the bill that authorizes the $750 million expenditure. Legislators were informed that the stadium would require nearly $900 million more in road improvements, but only after the session began in earnest. Thus, all the other overdue improvements would just have to be neglected at this time (in favor of all assets put at the disposal of the NFL Owners). The bill required a two-thirds vote. In the assembly, the stadium supporters were short several votes. But at the very last minute, after some behind-the-scenes lobbying, some “nays” magically became “yeas,” and it passed by one single solitary vote.
At an NFL Owners meeting in Houston, Davis insisted he's going to move to Las Vegas, and told his fellow owners he'd submit relocation plans in January. But Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, pushed back and said that all things being equal, the NFL would prefer to keep the Raiders in Oakland where they are now. Davis is not the most-liked owner, and can’t move the team without getting the votes of at least 24 of the league’s 32 owners.
Since Oakland won’t hand Davis a public subsidy, the Raiders will move in a few years, once a new Las Vegas Arena is built. Nobody even knows what Adelson’s role is now, let alone what it will be if this bogus plan gets pushed thru upon the citizens. But he'll put up $650M out of the goodness of his heart - NOT.
A Raiders move will be one sweet deal for Davis & Adelson and their buddies on the same page in Synagogue sessions — but the Mormons might yet throw a wet blanket on forking over the largest public subsidy in history. That's because it's their Clark County that will get none of the cash flow from that stadium, zero from the parking, zero from any and all naming rights, zero from the gates. 100% of any money made goes to the team.
If tourists don't rush to see a Raiders game, a new hotel tax won't cover the $750 million tab, and then the Clark County taxpayers will be on the hook to flip the bill.

"LVTC said it would take 25,000 people to build it, when it's usually more like 3,000,” said Roger Noll, Stanford University Sports Economist who advised some stadium opponents. “They claim it will add 40,000 permanent jobs,” he said, “No sane person would believe a number like that.”
Roger Noll concluded: “The fix was in.”
LVTC held its one & only meeting to allow critics to have their say — they limited them to a mere three minutes apiece.
After the committee issued its report, the governor called the legislature into a special session to ram through the bill that authorizes the $750 million expenditure. Legislators were informed that the stadium would require nearly $900 million more in road improvements, but only after the session began in earnest. Thus, all the other overdue improvements would just have to be neglected at this time (in favor of all assets put at the disposal of the NFL Owners). The bill required a two-thirds vote. In the assembly, the stadium supporters were short several votes. But at the very last minute, after some behind-the-scenes lobbying, some “nays” magically became “yeas,” and it passed by one single solitary vote.
At an NFL Owners meeting in Houston, Davis insisted he's going to move to Las Vegas, and told his fellow owners he'd submit relocation plans in January. But Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, pushed back and said that all things being equal, the NFL would prefer to keep the Raiders in Oakland where they are now. Davis is not the most-liked owner, and can’t move the team without getting the votes of at least 24 of the league’s 32 owners.
Since Oakland won’t hand Davis a public subsidy, the Raiders will move in a few years, once a new Las Vegas Arena is built. Nobody even knows what Adelson’s role is now, let alone what it will be if this bogus plan gets pushed thru upon the citizens. But he'll put up $650M out of the goodness of his heart - NOT.
A Raiders move will be one sweet deal for Davis & Adelson and their buddies on the same page in Synagogue sessions — but the Mormons might yet throw a wet blanket on forking over the largest public subsidy in history. That's because it's their Clark County that will get none of the cash flow from that stadium, zero from the parking, zero from any and all naming rights, zero from the gates. 100% of any money made goes to the team.
If tourists don't rush to see a Raiders game, a new hotel tax won't cover the $750 million tab, and then the Clark County taxpayers will be on the hook to flip the bill.
The Raiders going on a winning streak will pave the way..
