With a franchise transcentant superstar in Doncic available and potential stars in Jaren Jackson, Bamba and Porter, Atlanta takes a skinny 150 lbs guard who will get destroyed on every single switch and cannot possibly hold up over a full 82 game season as well as get exposed in the 2nd half at Oklahoma? Wow this pick could set this team back for a decade.

Nobody expected Steph Curry to be anything special either.

    I hate that comparison...

People compare Trae to Curry, now that's his expectation to be the next curry.

Davidson's coach McKillop is great. His teams play excellent ball with great fundamentals.

Curry didn't just come from nowhere. But what average nba fan knows who the hell Davidson is?

OU was awful last year. Young had a nice 3 pt shot early in the year, but that's about it. The kid is a turnover machine.

He might have a few "wow" games, but will get eaten alive by the pros imo

Hes definitely not Steph...never said he was...ive actually said several times here over the past months Young will likely be a bust...but give the kid a chance...if ever there was an era of the nba where a guy like Young could excel, he found it...chuck 3s and see what happens...its not like the league is full of defensive players right? I made a ton of money that college hoops season where Curry became a college superstar...i know better than most Young is nothing like Steph, all im saying is give him a few years and lets see what happens...if he can shoot the 3, there will always be a place for Young in the league...if Mike Miller lasted as long as he did, Trae has hope

You're right about the nba and no defense. So I guess he could be a good 3pt shooter.

Why draft him so high though?

The kid is a little to hyped. Guys like Miles Bridges and Sexton were still available. That's nuts imo.

When has Atlanta Hawks upper management ever done anything right? Why start now?

They did draft John Collins last year and unloaded Howard and J.J albatross contracts and dropped Teague like a hot potato so they do a few things right once in a while.

And Steph was a Junior entering the draft and Young is a Freshman. If there's one universal truth to drafting, it's that nobody knows. Analyst don't know. Punters on covers definitely don't. I don't like the pick either, simply because I like Schroeder and the league is getting taller and longer, but to hear guys say he'll never be this or that is comical. Everybody claims to be experts on Steph now but even after his breakout year there's not anyone who can honestly say they had him a top 3-5 type of prospect. Hindsight is always 20/20 and everyone is a draft expert after the fact. They were smart to pick up an extra 1 by moving down 2 spots. I would've grabbed Big Mo personally but it's all a crap shoot.

I agree with the op the Hawks messed up they should of drafted Mo Bamba.  Jevon Carter locked up Trae Young and make him look soft.

why cant he be steph? It just like when people say Kobe isnt Jordan. Hes still good. literally splitting hairs at this point. he needs to get in better shape. He got broken down as the college season went on. The NBA season is a grind so he obviously needs to work on some conditioning or have his usage toned down.

I didn't like this draft at at all in my opinion. But in todays game where the success starts at the POINT GUARD position i see no problem reaching for Trae Young. There isnt another player like him in the draft and he can thank steph curry for paving the way because as great as Trae Young looked at times during the season there is no way he goes Top 5 without the "steph curry effect"

All true, Terp. I did like the very top of this draft. Ayton, Bagley, Doncic, Jackson, Bamba, ect. There's good size and length, good versatility, and as i've been saying for a fea years, that's what the league is becoming. Everybody wants these kids that are all knees and elbows. Long and gangly. It is basketball, after all. No 19 year old kid translates to a good NBA defender but get a kid that's 6'7+ with a 6'10+ wingspan and I guarantee you can turn him into one.

    Good discussion.

We'll see how the kid plays point guard in the pros. Assist/turnover ratio is key.

    I'm not doubting his talent.

I'm not doubting his talent either but the league is getting taller and longer. And with what teams like to do now with switching and positionless basketball, even Steph who I think gets a bum rap defensively, is looked at as a liability.

I never had a bigger eye roll in my life than when Billups compared Trey to Curry....

He’s one of the greatest guards of ALL TIME...

True, Scal, but anybody that claims they knew he would be an all-time great coming out of college is a liar. I get the eye roll because we all know, Billups included, that he won't be a generational talent like Curry but what he's tasked with doing is making a draft comparison. Curry was a slightly built combo with crazy range. Even in Oakland, guy's were rolling their eyes. Saying ".....but....but....Monta?!" I liked the pick based on his shooting and him being closer to a true point but even I wasn't over the moon. And I had watched him pretournament, which is where a lot of the non-capping public caught wind of him. So while the eye roll is warranted, i'm not gonna knock Chauncey. It's actually the most natural comparison.

    Another point is this.

Tony Ressler owns the Hawks - I knew the guy during his salad days as a junk bond guy So Cal.  A businessman-promoter first, he wants to have a shiny new hood ornament to get more return on his investment.  He insisted on this, no matter what the basketball folks said.

As far as comparisons to Steph, it's apples and oranges.  They're totally different at different stages of getting drafted going to different places.

No 19 year old kid can play defense in the NBA. I don't like his size, and the main reason for that is the way defense is played in today's NBA, but let's not act like lack of defense is an indictment on a lottery pick. These kids are almost all one dones and guy's don't come to the league with one of no years of college as great defenders. My problem with Young is I believe he lacks the frame to develope into a legit pro defender. Which small guard is tho? If they are, they aren't really scorers. Beverly? Rondo? And even those guys will increasingly get exposed in today's league. Chris Paul is one small guard who is a scoring presence and a decent defender and he's super dirty. He shoves, throws elbows, and punches on just about every offensive and defensive play. How else to you creates space at his size. It's not like he can juat elevate over some 6'6" 20 year old with arms for days. And that's what the league is becoming. A bunch of guys 6'5"-7'1" with crazy long arms that can shoot, pass, and handle decent enough. Why wouldn't the league become that. It's a verticle game. Would Isaiah Thomas make it as a volleyball player?

Would Trae Young for that matter. Irish makes a good point, this pick was about splash but once in a lifetime players are just that. In today's NBA, I don't waste a top 5 on a guy that's 6'1" because I hope he can be Steph. Not when Mo Bamba is on the board.

Looking into this deeper, isnt the current Hawks GM from the Warriors tree? So it looks like they are trying to completely rebuild this team from the ground up using the Warriors blueprint of collecting shooters and going from there...we shall see.

most of the lottery picks are overrated douchebags.  the best players will end up being middle to late 1st rounders and 2nd rounders.

If you truly think that, why dont you list your top 5 picks from yesterday and back up your ridiculously jealous comment.
