I agree Beatles are immortal but I include Zeppelin as well.
Stones are mortal IMO so I will go with them as a choice

Tom Jones is still killing 'em, but he's a solo artist and not a band.
Zep and Stones are in the same orbit as the Beatles, in my humble opinion.
I would throw Dire Straits into the mix.
You also have to include The Yardbirds. So many great guitar players rose to greatness through this band, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck to name three.

Man, you could make a bigger list of Immortals
For a unique sound, a band that sounded the way they sounded, and nobody else did, I'll go for these Immortals
Beatles
Led Zep
The Who
I'll list The Who as being unique, and for longevity, which, in hindsight, the Beatle and Zep did not have (of course, the Beatles, as individuals, continued on, much to the dismay of reunion nuts)
The Sex Pistols flamed out too fast, The Police weren't the original ska band, Genesis was just too different w/o Peter Gabriel (although I'll give him Honorable Mention). Emerson Lake and Palmer another one of my faves....................
